Be prepared to ask the writing manager.
The first thing you need to do is make sure you have At least Two high-quality scripts In your portfolio, be ready to send to the industry. How do you know when they are “ready”? When they achieve at least one of the following:
• Highly rated From an agent, literary manager, producer or executive
• Generate buzz On online promotion sites such as Blacklist
• win or place very high Enter one or more Best Screenplay contests
• Get “Recommended” From one or more script coverage services
If your script doesn’t meet all or any of the above goals, we strongly recommend that you don’t start sending it to a writing manager. They receive a ton of comments, and yours is likely to get lost in the mix.
Don’t make the same mistake Many aspiring writers approach script managers, but there’s no guarantee of a script that will impress. Two, but preferably three, amazing scripts.
There’s no point if you just have a great script. The first question any respectable manager will ask is: “What else do you have?” If you don’t want to miss a great opportunity on the spot, you’d better be able to show them another play that’s just as good.
Inquiry letter.
Next, you need to make a Valid inquiry letteror in most cases “check email”.
There’s no doubt about it: this stadium needs to get hot. It needs to be short, sweet, and compelling enough to entice the reader to just read the script.
This is your time to shine.
include a Summary, brief summary Script and a brief bio, remember to mention when you met at the Austin Film Festival, recommendations you received, or the fact that you were highly regarded in the Nicholl competition.
We don’t have space here, but there’s plenty of useful information on how to write a great query letter. Look it up, and if necessary, even pay a professional script consultant to take a look before contacting a writing manager on this list.
It might also be a good idea to write one longer summary Be about two to three pages in length, in case your manager asks to read that first rather than the entire script.
at last, Create a spreadsheetdetailing the name of each Hollywood management company or literary manager you contacted, who you spoke to or emailed, when, and what the outcome was. Trust us, this step is priceless.
Decide which writers managers to ask.
While our lists of script managers are comprehensive, they may not be comprehensive all suitable for you, or willing to accept your submissions. Therefore, it is worth Drill down the list a little So just ask those managers who are not only a good fit for you but who might be interested in your material.
The most obvious place to start is with the writers managers in the first part of the list, who openly accept Ask proactively.
These managers don’t mind if you’ve never met, been recommended by anyone they know in the industry, or if you don’t have any form of representation.
they are Actively looking for new writers Therefore, you can ask them without any hindrance. (There are likely many such managers also hidden in the third “Unknown Submission Policy” section.)
Break the rules.
That’s not to say that writers managers necessarily mean it when they say they don’t want to receive unsolicited material. It’s not as uncommon as you might think for writers who ignore the “No Unsolicited Submissions” notice and send in a query, and they get an email that says, “Normally we don’t accept unsolicited submissions.” Requested query, but please send your script”.
no harm Do the same when sending inquiries to these script managers in part two. After all, what do you have to lose? The worst that can happen is that your email will be deleted, but if you sent an unfinished query and log line, the chances of it getting someone’s attention are slim.
Screenwriting managers and genres.
Another good strategy is to start by targeting all the managers on your list who share your thoughts. type sensitivity. Find all the movies written by rep writers that are similar to your personal favorites and similar to your own movies, and contact them.
For example, if you have a low-budget indie thriller, a literary manager representing Jeremy Saulnier might be more likely to be interested in your material than one representing Judd Apatow.
As a new writer, it’s also a good idea to start with goals smaller literary management companies and new writers managers who have yet to build a large client list, as opposed to larger, more established managers.
Smaller companies and new managers often have more time and energy to devote to aspiring writers and their thriving careers, and are more eager to succeed.
Send your inquiry letter.
Once everything is set and it’s time to actually contact the managers on your list, be sure to find out who to address your issue to and what their responsibilities are personal submission policy yes.
If they accept unsolicited inquiries, specific instructions are usually provided on their website. (We’ve linked to these pages in the listing.) If, as in many cases, they don’t, then you’ll need to try to find Assistant name You can bring your questions to Hollywood Management in person.
Try to avoid sending generic inquiries to “To Whom It May Concern” or “Mr./Ms.” as this will look like you are sending out a large number of inquiries to everyone in town at the same time. If you only have a phone number or email address but don’t know who to contact, call or email to ask who you should send your inquiry to.
Get personal.
Once you have a name, Design your query individually to that person and then call or email them. (Few managers read only genuine snail mail.)
If you have a confident phone presencecalling might be a good option Because it’s a better way to build relationships. Emails, on the other hand, can easily end up in the junk folder, be deleted, or forgotten about.
Sending a query to a writer manager means – you just Query Are they interested in reading the script, so avoid sending it right away. Or anything else like a full synopsis, character breakdown, pictures, etc.
How and when to ask a script manager.
Most managers also prefer to Email bodyrather than in the attachment. If they are interested in your inquiry, they will contact you and ask to read the full synopsis or the script itself.
Finally, make sure you don’t send your query letter out weekend, public holiday Or other times, the script manager is less likely to be fully focused on the job. The best time is probably mid-week.
Next step.
Don’t panic if you don’t receive a reply right away. At all costs, resist the temptation to immediately call every literary management company you’ve inquired about and ask why they haven’t responded yet. If they don’t connect, they probably aren’t interested.
However, there are some Possible beneficial reactions Your query:
• Request summary reading. Great, send it over!
• Request to read script. Even better. Ask what their submission policy is and send it
• Ask for additional reading. In this case you should ask them if they want to read a summary or the entire script and send it
After receiving one of the above three responses, you can Follow up on your submission Give it to your writing manager in a few months. Again, keep your questions to the point, friendly and professional.
While you’re waiting…
But while you’re waiting, you should write, hone your craftbuild connections, and reach out to more screenwriting managers with new questions. If you don’t receive any response or anything favorable to your query, abstract, or script after a literary manager reads it, you may want to rethink your strategy or the quality of your work.
The best thing is that the writer manager is really think Find new talent.
They need you as much as you need them, so you have more power than you think in this situation.
