CBS drama “Ghost” is still going strong, and for good reason.
The British-based comedy has continued to entertain since it premiered in 2021 and is now in its fourth season.
It’s not easy to keep viewers interested, especially when there are so many shows on television that feature ghosts in various forms.
So what makes CBS’s Ghost stand out from other shows?
Here are seven ways Ghost keeps it fresh.
unique plot
It’s clear that Ghost has found a winning formula with its unique premise centering on eight souls who all have a connection to a B&B in the countryside.
Yes, the storyline may be simple, but it’s a great vehicle for telling ghost-centric stories.
Most ghosts have unfinished business that keeps them here on Earth. They finally pick up the pieces and head to the other side.
But the ghosts of the Woodstone Bed and Breakfast have captured the hearts of the mansion’s owners, Sam and Jay.
Instead of trying to get rid of the ghosts, Sam writes their memoirs, changes TV channels for them, and does a bunch of other hilarious chores while trying to make her B&B a success.
eccentric characters
The show keeps it fresh with its quirky characters.
Far from being cookie-cutter, these ghosts are interesting and surprisingly three-dimensional after death.
Have you ever heard of the ghost who likes to watch reality dating shows in his spare time? The ghost trio?
The core characters of Ghosts are all different, both in terms of personality and the era in which they lived.
Spend 30 minutes with this motley crew, from Robber Baroness Heidi, who unfortunately dies wearing high heels, to the leader of the lair, Pete, who gets an arrow in his neck, to Flower, who can turn anyone on simply by walking past her. Always fun.
Compelling storyline
There’s nothing worse than when your favorite TV series becomes redundant and mediocre because of its storytelling.
Ghost successfully avoids this problem through its multiple storylines.
Between each ghost’s backstory and their daily lives, a fascinating storyline unfolds.
Season after season, we learn more about the ghosts and their connection to the property and each other.
Like any good story, the history and daily lives of ghosts are complex and emotional.
Over the past three seasons, the main ghosts have evolved into more than just memorable characters.
The fact that they are dead does not prevent them from fully enjoying their afterlife. Watching a nervous Heidi undergo a sexual awakening and Isaac express his feelings for Nigel, the series avoids stagnation.
Hilarious humor and touching moments
Grief and moving on are both delicate themes, but the writers of “Ghost” use serious scenes and light-hearted humor to express both themes.
The show explores challenging life themes through the eyes of Sam, Jay and Ghost.
The comedy follows the characters’ sad moments as they confront death, regret, troubled relationships from the past and unfinished business. But by the end of the show, you’re often laughing.
Some of their life advice isn’t too bad either!
unlikely friendship
Usually, people tend to conflict when they are on opposite sides. This is no different in the cute, fictional little world of ghosts.
Due to their mixture of personalities and some very strong beliefs, Ghost‘s protagonists are often at odds. It puts Sam and Jay in the middle and lets the other characters choose sides.
During these tense and uncomfortable moments, some unlikely friendships are forged.
Who would have thought that free-spirited flowers and Puritan patience could find common ground? Or will Alberta and Isaac form their own type of bond?
There’s never a dull moment in the CBS series, which helps keep character interactions fresh and exciting.
romantic entanglements
When several people (in this case, ghosts) are trapped together for decades, romance is bound to blossom.
While some of the romance between the zany characters in “Ghost” is predictable. For example, “Flowers” and “Thor”. I don’t foresee other romantic entanglements. For example, Heidi and Trevor.
Their brief little romance made me want to see what would happen between the Gilded Age socialite and former stockbroker Trevor.
Their romance is endearing, weird—and hilariously funny. The same goes for the connection between Isaac and Nigel.
surprising plot twist
One of the most important ways to keep your audience engaged is to be a little unpredictable.
The CBS comedy has managed to keep fans guessing through several storylines. One storyline in particular that has us all guessing is Flower’s departure.
Flowers being sucked out are – yes, you read that right – shocking. If you’re not a big fan of Ghost, this word means to move up in the show.
This is a plot twist that most people didn’t see coming. The show makes us believe she has passed into the afterlife. It wasn’t revealed until Season 3 of Ghosts that she fell into a well!
Ghost Season 4 will be no different, with showrunners already teasing that Jay will be seeing ghosts this season. How long that lasts, we’re not sure. But after watching him communicate through Sam for so long, this should be fun!
