Australian Horror Movies of 2023 talk to me It’s all about the dead person appearing in the hand. It’s kind of like an old urban myth. It is said that the hands of the dead protect thieves. In this case it’s a candle. As long as this thing stays on, people with bad intentions will be protected.
Similar to a Ouija board, this thing allows anyone who “shakes/holds” the hand to talk to the deceased. They also allow the dead to take over their bodies.
Bad idea.
story
Mia is an orphan no matter what. Her mother committed suicide and she was estranged from her father. She is part of her best friend’s (Jade) family. Her “adopted” family was somewhat dysfunctional, as the mother tended to act aggressively in times of crisis.
The film follows Mia and her “new” friends as they experience the hand of death. Things are moving quickly.
main actors
Sophie Wilde plays Mia.
Alexandra Jensen is Jade.
Miranda Otto plays Sue, Jade’s mother.
Joe Byrd is Riley.
Otis Danger is Daniel.
Zoe Terrax plays Haley. Easily the most hated character in the movie.
behind the scenes
Brothers Danny and Michael Phillippe bring us an Australian horror film that’s neither a zombie fest nor an apocalypse. These two movies also gave us some inspirations and winks from other movies.
The dying Joey (or Wallaby) at the beginning of the film is an obvious nod to The Long Weekend, both the original and the remake. The film’s protagonists, Peter and Marcia, knock down a “kangaroo” at the beginning of their journey. We can almost believe that these are all part of the same “verse.”
exist Very the beginning of talk to meAfter the party scene, Riley calls another guy an elf. Another reference to the great underground franchise, TLOTR. Miranda Ott, who plays the feisty mother, is a regular in these New Zealand epics.
There are other horror movie allusions that don’t originate from that part of the Western Hemisphere. The hospital scare owes something to Bloodline and some horror movies.
dark
talk to me It’s dark. Literally and figuratively. The Philippou couple took this alternative to the old Ouija board and managed to make it scary.
Wilde is fantastic as Mia. The juxtaposition of her cheeky face and possession is creepy and disturbing. that’s the key talk to me It’s more disturbing than scary or scary.
No matter what we think of this movie, it works.
judgment
talk to me It’s a solid 4 stars. It ticks most boxes and has no real misfires in terms of plot and storyline. The film airs on Showtime via Paramount+. A24 has a solid horror film on its hands.
