    Carla Sofia Gascón talks ‘Emilia Perez’ Oscar buzz in San Sebastian

    emilia perez Star Carla Sofia Gasco has spoken candidly about her performance in Jacques Audiard’s one-of-a-kind Spanish-language musical, saying making history with an Oscar nomination was a possibility beyond her control.

    The transgender female actress has received critical acclaim since the film premiered in Cannes and won the best actress award in May alongside co-stars Zoe Saldanha and Selena Gomez . Gascón plays two characters: one is a notorious drug cartel leader, and the other is a transgender woman. emilia perezI have been on female hormone therapy for two years and am ready to complete my gender affirmation process by faking my own death and leaving behind my life of crime.

    Speaking at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Gascón’s native Spain on Sunday, the 52-year-old actress discussed the Oscar buzz following reports that she would be nominated for lead actress. If nominated, she would become the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for an Academy Award.

    Gascón interviewed hollywood reporterher translator and interpreter on the Spanish coast, talks about why she wants to focus attention on her performance.

    “You can do whatever you want to win [the Oscar]if you’re not going to win it, you’re not going to win it,” she said at the Maria Cristina Hotel. “There’s nothing I can do about it other than show my work. If it happens, it will be wonderful for me as an actor – it’s important. Sometimes, some people think they give you this award because you come from a certain A specific community, not because of your character, which annoys me.

    She continued: “I try to make sure that what happens has to do with my performance as an actor because everything else is beyond my control. I’m not trying to be falsely modest or anything like that here, but I’ve Fulfilled a role that few could fulfill.

    “Of course, I understand the importance of my community and the people I belong to, but the only thing I can do is act. I want the important things to be there too,” she added.

    Gascón spoke of wanting to “celebrate France” and Audia made a Spanish-language film submitted for Oscar consideration. She said she was surprised by how open the French were to her work and the Latin American world.

    “The French love their language. They are basically their own people,” Gascón said. “It’s incredible that the French were able to open up and make a film like this in Spanish with characters from Latin America. For a French director and a French crew to make a film like this I think it’s a great thing things.
