Uber has rolled out live video streaming for teen accounts, giving parents the option to check on their teenager’s ride in real time through the driver’s front-facing smartphone camera. The feature is currently available across nine US markets, including Atlanta, Cleveland and Rhode Island, with a wider nationwide rollout planned in the coming weeks.
Once a trip begins, the teen’s linked parent or guardian receives a notification and can choose to access the live stream. Both the teen and driver are notified when the video is being viewed. Uber says access is limited to the linked parent or guardian, while the footage is encrypted and becomes inaccessible to the driver, teen and parent after the ride, except when Uber needs to review footage as part of a reported safety incident.
The feature adds another layer to Uber’s existing safety measures for teen accounts, which include live trip tracking, PIN verification and audio recording. Launched in the US in 2023, Uber’s teen accounts have since expanded to more than 50 countries.
