Gladys Knight Makes Major Career Decision After More Than 75 Years on Stage

Gladys Knight has been singing for audiences longer than most of her audiences have been alive. Seventy-five years on a stage is not a career; it’s an era. And now, at 82, the Empress of Soul is finally ready to ease off the throttle.

But she is not, in fact, catching that midnight train out of show business.

Knight announced Thursday, Aug. 27, that she’ll be “easing into fewer performances” as she moves into what she framed as the next stage of both her career and her life. Think of it less as the end of the line and more like fewer stops along the way.

“After much soul searching I’ve decided that I will be easing into fewer performances,” Knight wrote in a statement posted to Instagram. She said she plans to spend more time on projects with her husband, William McDowell — her collaborator on more than a few songs over their two-plus decades together — and visiting her many grandchildren.

Knight also made clear she isn’t disappearing. The seven-time Grammy winner thanked fans for their loyalty across what she called “three quarters of a century” and said she still hopes to see them “out and about and on the road.”

Some fans were disappointed by the announcement, but the vast majority responded positively. Knight has been a fixture in music for so long we can’t remember a time without her. Her catalog includes: “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “That’s What Friends Are For”; she even sang the James Bond theme in “Licence to Kill.”

And the discography is only part of it. There’s the Pips and their impossibly synchronized footwork, the sitcom and variety-show cameos, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, and the national anthem she delivered at the Super Bowl in her hometown of Atlanta.

When she and Patti LaBelle sat down for their 2020 Verzuz at Philadelphia’s Fillmore, the format billed it as a battle. To our delight, it played out as a church service between two old friends with nothing left to prove and every reason to enjoy proving it anyway. Yet Knight didn’t need the Verzuz platform, or any other stamp, to certify her place. From Motown to Vegas to the cookout playlist to a hip-hop generation that’s been sampling her for decades, she’s spent the better part of a century reminding us that she doesn’t miss.

The announcement follows continued touring into 2026, and last year’s Queens Tour alongside fellow R&B royalty Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan and Stephanie Mills. Her schedule also drew scrutiny in 2025, when her son, Shanga Hankerson, publicly raised concerns about the toll performing takes on his mother’s health. Knight waved off those concerns at the time, insisting she was healthy, happy and enjoying every minute.

This decision however came directly from Knight, and framed the choice on her own terms: not a health crisis, not an abrupt goodbye, but a decision about how she’d like to spend this next chapter of an extraordinary life.

After more than 75 years, Knight has more than earned the right to make a few less stops along the way.
