OpenShot 4.0 has been released, marking the first major update for the open-. The software continues to be distributed under the GPLv3 license and is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Color View: New Grading Tools
This update significantly expands color manipulation capabilities. The new “Color View” mode integrates the preview window, clip settings, color wheels, and professional video analysis tools (Scopes). The processing is powered by the “Color Grade” effect, which allows users to adjust exposure, contrast, temperature, tint, highlights, shadows, and saturation.
For advanced workflows, the editor now includes separate control wheels for global settings, shadows, midtones, and highlights. Four editable curves for the full image and individual color channels (RGB) have also been added. OpenShot 4.0 now supports loading .cube LUT files, with the ability to adjust their intensity rather than applying them at full strength. Every parameter supports keyframing, and the available analysis tools (histogram, waveform, RGB parade, and vectorscope) include a region-of-interest feature for detailed analysis of specific frame areas. The vectorscope also features a skin tone reference line.
AI technology has been integrated for automatic object masking. The new “Object Mask” effect creates animated selections based on multiple points, utilizing YOLO, EfficientSAM, and Cutie neural networks converted to ONNX format. Processing is performed locally on the user’s device, requiring no cloud services or paid subscriptions.
Recording View: New Capture Tools
The new “Recording View” mode allows users to capture webcam video, system audio, and microphone input directly into the project. Eachftware can automatically place camera footage over screen recordings in a picture-in-picture style
Other Notable Changes
In total, 10 new effects have been added, including Audio Visualization, Beat Sync, Film Grain, Denoise Image, Shadow, Glow, Displacement Map, Timer, Color Grade, and Object Mask. A significant technical improvement involves migrating the timeline to the native Qt framework, which eliminates the use of outdated web components and simplifies timeline editing.
The update became available on August 30, 2026. With offline AI processing and free access to professional-grade tools, OpenShot 4.0 remains a powerful solution for video editing across multiple operating systems.
