EXCLUSIVE: French filmmaker Marine Atlan’s Cannes Critics’ Week prize winner La Gradiva has been picked up for UK-Ireland by Metis Films, ahead of its BFI London Film Festival premiere, from mk2 Films.

The film is the directorial feature debut of Cesar-nominated cinematographer Atlan and won the top prize at Critics’ Week this year.

1-2 Special will release in North America.

Metis Films, launched by former Altitude and eOne executive Ben Metcalf in 2024, is planning a theatrical release in late 2026.

La Gradiva is about a class of high-school students on a school trip to Pompeii. Colas Quignard, Suzanne Gerin, Mitia Capellier and Antonia Buresi star.

It is produced by Inès Daïen Dasi of France’s Les Films du Poisson, with Italy’s Angelo Barbagallo as co-producer and Yaël Fogiel and Laetitia Gonzalez as associate producers.

Atlan co-wrote the script with Anne Brouillet and also served as cinematographer alongside Pierre Mazoyer.

“This astonishing debut left an indelible mark on all of us at Metis,” said Metcalf. “A gorgeous, swooning, coming-of-age masterpiece that we can’t wait to share with audiences.”
