The Prague Independent Film Festival returns in 2026 with an international selection of independent productions. In addition to film screenings, the programme also includes a competition for unproduced screenplays.

From 18 to 20 September, Prague will once again become a meeting place for independent filmmakers from various countries. The official selection of the Prague Independent Film Festival (PIFF) ranges from feature films and shorts to animations, music videos, documentaries and experimental films. Some of those involved will present their work in person in the Czech capital and discuss it with audiences.

    Psychodrama About Art and Obsession

“The Curse of Modigliani” by Diana Ringo tells the story of Max, an American painter trying to establish himself as an artist in Helsinki. When he discovers what he believes to be a diary belonging to Amedeo Modigliani, his initial inspiration turns into a dangerous obsession. Max is drawn into a world of visions, addiction and self-destruction. Edward Pishiyski and Diana Ringo play the leading roles. The supporting cast includes Aksel Spencer, Sakari Viittala and Ilkka Hautala.

Swedish Film Noir Set in 1968

“The Watchmaker” by Jonas Lawes is set in Sweden in 1968. Young thieves Sebbe and Adam damage a stolen gold watch and ask the reluctant watchmaker Karl Lundkvist for help. When Karl and his girlfriend Hedda become caught up in the conflict, the situation develops into a fight for survival. The leading roles are played by Otto Fahlgren, Hanna Alström, Olle Sarri and Casper Berglund.

    Directorial Debut by Ed Stoppard

The short film “The Confession” marks the directing and screenwriting debut of British actor Ed Stoppard. In 1930s Russia, a playwright is interrogated by secret service officers over a play performed in Moscow. Stoppard is known for productions including “The Pianist”, “Upstairs Downstairs” and “Knightfall”. The film was inspired by Mikhail Bulgakov’s satirical novel “Black Snow”.

“The Ghost Writer” by Todd I. Gordon is about an ageing writer who believes his assistant has stolen his latest novel. Inspired by Henry James’s “The Middle Years”, the production explores dementia, artistic obsession and the loss of reality.

    Experimental Films and Well-Known Producers

“The Pilgrim’s Last Journey” by Jason Tovey concludes a film trilogy created together with artist Peter Gallagher. The previous instalments were released in 2017 and 2019. Director Derek Frey is represented by “The Current State of the Backyard Pool Industry”. A long-time collaborator of Tim Burton, he worked as a producer on films including “Alice in Wonderland”, “Big Eyes”, “Frankenweenie” and “Dumbo”.

    Competition for Unproduced Screenplays

In addition to the film screenings, the festival also aims to support emerging screenwriters. Eight previously unproduced screenplays have been selected for this year’s competition. The focus is therefore not only on completed productions, but also on film ideas at an early stage of development.

Founded in 2016, the Prague Independent Film Festival celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2026. It provides independent filmmakers with an international platform and enables direct interaction with audiences.
