The University of New Mexico’s Film and Digital Arts program has been internationally recognized by MovieMaker Magazine on its 2026 list of The 30 Best Film Schools in the U.S. and Canada.

MovieMaker Magazine is an influential, industry-leading publication that shares actual news, filmmaking insights and portfolio-building strategies with its readers. Many future film students turn to this publication and its many yearly lists when choosing where to study.

This honor is even more meaningful because it places UNM’s Film and Digital Arts program alongside the nation’s leading film schools, including those closest to Hollywood.

“To be recognized by MovieMaker Magazine means that UNM Film and Digital Arts is regarded as an important hub of digital media education, and that UNM has become a destination university for those who want to work at the cutting edge of moving image art,” said James Stone, department chair of UNM’s Film and Digital Arts program.

The list considers three points for inclusion: affordability, location and the ability to prepare each student for after graduation. UNM’s Film and Digital Arts program is recognized for all three areas.

Stone shared that the program’s students are challenged and deeply supported through a rigorous, well-equipped education at a fraction of the cost of other institutions. Stating that “our tuition fees are considerably lower than most. This opens the door to many students who might have considered film school out of reach.”

The ranking highlights the program’s interdisciplinary, team-based collaborative teaching techniques that prepare students to compete for top jobs with professionals across the entertainment industry.

Its innovative program includes professional-grade cameras and equipment for students to learn on from day one. Additionally, the program offers an annual summer class known as The Show, a large-scale filmmaking experience that applies classroom lessons in real-world settings; a Mentor Series which is a guest speaker series; collaboration with local film and industry organizations, including the New Mexico Film Commission and Netflix; and many opportunities for mentoring outside the classroom, as students often work on faculty and departmental projects, thereby building and expanding their community and professional networks and credentials.

“We are thrilled to see this program receive the recognition it so richly deserves,” said Harris Smith, dean of the College of Fine Arts. “This honor reflects the extraordinary dedication of our faculty and staff and their unwavering commitment to nurturing the talent and potential. This survey confirms what New Mexicans have long known: when given the opportunity, encouragement, and support to succeed, there is truly nothing we cannot achieve together.”

The article’s author notes that a strong film school can guide students through collaborations and camera work toward their first jobs in the industry. Film school training can also improve the overall outcome of independent filmmakers’ projects, whether they are releasing them themselves, applying to festivals, or building a portfolio for future jobs. For aspiring industry professionals, this pivotal education can help develop the discipline and versatility needed to succeed in the industry.

“This recognition gives our department faculty and students something to feel really good about,” said Stone. “New Mexico and UNM do amazing, groundbreaking work every day, and this recognition is one way to celebrate this work.”
