Salem Ground (2024): How to Make a Vampire Boring 101

Watch the 2024 remake Salem LotI have to ask a question: Is this a lesson? “How to make a vampire boring: 101?” Disappointingly, that seems to be the case.

    Dropping my website template here.

I’m both excited and skeptical about Max’s “original” King’s homage to the vampire classic. I have read this book so many times that the pages have become thinner and it is very popular. *although not this My favorite title is The Stand.

King’s hyper-visual style makes his books difficult to transfer. There’s also the annoying Hollywood template/canon(?) that dictates adaptations must Change source material. a lot of.

Some filmmakers choose not to follow this golden rule. Clint Eastwood adapted “The Outlaw Josey Wells” from Forrest Carter’s original book “Escape to Texas.”

Ira Levin tells a funny anecdote about Roman Polanski and Rosemary’s baby. Apparently, no one told the new director to ignore the source material. Polanski contacted Levine. He wanted to ask which page of the New York Times the shirt ad appeared on. No one seemed to tell Polanski about the existing Hollywood canon, Levine said.

    Back to topic

Salem Lot Contains many now iconic scenes and characters. I’m talking about the book here, not the 1979 miniseries. The casting of the main vampire in “The Lot” is stupid. So does the character’s appearance, and an almost complete lack of verbal skills.

At the time, I was delighted to learn that James Mason would be starring in the show. I was ecstatic. One of my favorite actors will play the lead vampire. no.

mini series and now new releases Salem Lot Instead, the choice was made to have actor Reggie Nard dress up like Nosferatu.

    Salem's Lot and Nosferatu
    Still from a silent film.

This is a terrifying creature, no doubt, but not the charismatic, erudite Barlow of the book. This move alone doomed the Max remake from the start.

Reggie Nard suffered for his art.

    Casting may not be everything

There are some cast changes that are not at all annoying. Replacing Jimmy Cody with a woman has no real impact on the process. The move to make Mark Petrie a young black guy is admirable. Eliminate the special relationship between Ben Mills and Susan’s father by having the parents die before the story starts to hurt.

    main cast

    Louis Pullman as Ben Mills

    Mackenzie Lee as Susan Norton

Jordan Preston Carter is Mark Petrie *This young actor knocks this one out of the park.

    Alfre Woodard as Dr. Cody

    Bill Camp as Matt Burke

Cameo: William Sadler as Parkins Gillespie

    rewrite script

Writer-director Gary Dauberman ignores what makes Salem Lot So special.

    Fixtures.

The knife is in the basement. *King said this scene was supposed to be about mice. a lot of. The Glick Boy’s fear and his desperate escape through the woods; night. Cody’s reaction after being bitten.

Dauberman had a long list at his feet. His substitutions, omissions, and revisions take a lot out of the film.

The move to preserve the Salem lot’s 1970s style is paying off.

    but.

The rest of the film fades away like 4th of July fireworks.

    judgment

Everyone’s effort was terrible. The actors give their best performances, but “Salem Manor” only gets a meager two stars for effort and even less for story. Of course, it’s streamed on the Max. If you haven’t read King’s book or know much about vampires, please watch it. Or if you want to see the actor who played Petrie, otherwise; read the book.
