McBride will make his first major feature directing effort with the project.
Best known for creating and starring in HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones, he has also co-written the screenplay alongside Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri.
Cooper was reportedly McBride’s first choice for Duke.
Despite a busy schedule, the actor agreed to join the project after reading the script and meeting with the director.
The pair have previously worked together, with Cooper making a guest appearance in The Righteous Gemstones.
A new direction for G.I. Joe
Plot details and further casting have yet to be revealed, but the film will offer a new take on the Hasbro property.
Paramount has also confirmed that the project will no longer be connected to the planned Transformers crossover previously teased in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Duke was previously played by Channing Tatum in 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and its 2013 sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
The new film will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian and Zev Foreman for Hasbro Entertainment.
Cooper adds another major project
Cooper is currently working on an Ocean’s prequel, which he is writing and directing as well as starring in alongside Margot Robbie and Monica Barbaro.
The actor, whose films include A Star Is Born, Silver Linings Playbook and American Sniper, also recently directed, co-wrote and starred in Is This Thing On?.
No release date has yet been announced for the new G.I. Joe film.
