Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal Pictures have premiered the trailer for Joshua Giuliano’s brutal slasher film “River” after acquiring it in Toronto last month.
The opening-night selection of TIFF’s Midnight Madness program, the film teams two modern scream queens – “Happy Death Day” star Jessica Rothe with “Don’t Breathe” and “Evil Dead” alum Jane Levy.
The pair play estranged sisters who reunite with their younger brother (Max Mattern) in their rural hometown to scatter their late father’s ashes at his favorite spot along a remote river.
As the sun goes down, the boat is dead and there’s no cell service. They’re stranded miles from help, and there’s someone standing, staring, from the shore.
Soon a fight for survival begins as they are mercilessly hunted by a disturbing masked figure (Dane DiLiegro).
When it was announced last year, the project was dubbed a Shudder Original Production, with Independent Film Company handling its theatrical release.
Those plans are gone, with Universal set to give the film a full theatrical release on January 15th.
