The Green Bay Film Festival is set to happen again this year on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m.
First established in 2011, the festival will soon start its 15th year of showing independent films from around the world.
These movies are carefully selected out of 100s for the festival.
“Our screeners range from all age groups […] so we got a pretty honest opinion about the films,” said Program Director Jim Schwartz, who got into the position he’s in today because of independent films. “Because I saw a film that was filmed in Door County, a feature film that was made with ten thousand dollars. That made me think, ‘Oh my god, there is something here.’”
The Film Festival is doing things slightly differently this year, cutting out their usual feature length film to show more short films — fifteen to be exact with a variety of different genres of movie, each made with passion behind them.
This event will be hosted in The Tarlton, a historical theater with just the atmosphere for a film festival, plus a full bar and food.
There is a special energy from films developed by directors built on passion rather than money, and it is worth going to support that idea alone.
“That ability to see what filmmakers, what they’re passionate about and they’re bringing their passion to the screen,” Schwartz said.
Not only are the films a great watch, but the community that has built around them are worth getting to know.
Expect people who simply love independent film there as well as professionals in the field.
“There is just something about going out to see movies. Making an event of it and leaving the house and being amongst other people,” Schwartz said.
