Canon Japan’s repair support is coming to an end this autumn for a group of long-serving EF lenses, including some of the most-loved glass of the DSLR era. Canon Japan’s own product repair pages now list repair service end dates of October and November 2026 for several lenses.
We checked Canon Japan’s repair listings directly. The EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM shows a repair period ending in October 2026, while both the EF 135mm f/2L USM and the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM are listed as ending in November 2026. Digital Camera World also names the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM and the EF 300mm f/4L IS USM, the oldest of the group, which dates back to 1996.
Canon sets a repair period for each product once it is discontinued, based on how long it can keep parts in stock. When that period runs out, its service centres in Japan stop taking those lenses in for repair. These dates are specific to Canon Japan, and we’re asking Canon UK whether the same timings apply here.
Why it matters
Plenty of photographers still use these lenses every day, either on DSLRs or adapted to EOS R bodies with Canon’s EF-EOS R adapters. The 85mm f/1.2L II and 135mm f/2L in particular have become cult portrait lenses, and they remain popular buys on the used market because of how they render.
For now, nothing changes for owners. The lenses will keep working, and independent repairers can still service them for as long as parts are available. However, if you rely on one for paid work, this is a good time to send it in for a service while Canon can still do it, or at least check its condition.
Anyone buying one of these lenses second-hand should also factor in that official repairs are going away. Over the next year, we’d expect that to affect prices.
