The Cinémathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg in Luxembourg City will host a two-day tribute to screenwriter and author Efthimis Filippou on October 28-29, under the title “A Conversation with Efthimis Filippou.”
A frequent collaborator of internationally acclaimed filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, Filippou co-wrote the screenplays for “Dogtooth,” “Alps,” “L,” “The Lobster,” “Chevalier” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” In addition to screenplays, he has written prose and plays staged in Greece and abroad.
His work has received international recognition. He and Lanthimos were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for “The Lobster” (2015), which also won the European Film Award for Best Screenwriter. Filippou and Lanthimos won the Best Screenplay award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” while “Alps” earned them the Golden Osella for Best Screenplay at the 2011 Venice Film Festival.
Filippou will attend a public discussion at the Cinémathèque on October 28 at 7 pm, followed by a screening of the absurdist psychological drama “Dogtooth.”
On October 29 at 6.30 pm, he will introduce “The Photograph,” a 1986 film by Greek filmmaker Nikos Papatakis that he has selected for the program. The film uses an allegorical modern tragedy to explore Greece’s conflicts from the Civil War to the restoration of democracy in 1974.
The tribute will include screenings of nine additional films.
