Heated Rivalry star Hudson Williams is writing a new film featuring an ex-hockey player, but the actor has admitted that his work on the hit hockey romance series has made him question whether to keep the character in the script.
Williams revealed the project during an interview with Entertainment Weekly alongside his Yaga co-star Carrie-Anne Moss. The actor explained that he and his collaborators had considered changing the character’s sporting background to avoid similarities with Heated Rivalry, in which he plays professional hockey player Shane Hollander.
“I’m writing a movie right now, but one character is an ex-hockey player,” Williams said. “We were like, ‘But if we have this hockey player and then you’ve done a hockey show…’ We’re getting tripped up on it and we’re considering other sports, but for some reason this character just made way more sense being an ex-hockey player.”
He added that the creative process had made him reflect on the limits artists can place on themselves, saying, “It’s almost like you have to bust through the prison of your own mind or construct of your own mind.”
Williams did not share further details about the film, with his team declining to elaborate when asked about the project.
Before gaining international recognition through Heated Rivalry, Williams wrote and directed several short films, including Soakers, Buttons and Inside Augustine Mendoza’s Quotidian Apartment. His latest project marks another opportunity for the actor to develop his work behind the camera while continuing to build his acting career.
Williams is also preparing for the next chapter of Heated Rivalry, with production on its second season continuing in Canada. The series, adapted from Rachel Reid’s Game Changers novels, follows the complicated relationship between rival hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, played by Connor Storrie.
The actor will next appear in Yaga, a detective thriller that reimagines the Slavic folklore figure Baba Yaga in a contemporary setting. Williams plays two characters in the series: Henry Park, an heir to a fishing empire who mysteriously disappears, and Logan Casey, his lookalike roommate. Carrie-Anne Moss also stars in the series, which is scheduled to premiere on AMC+ in the United States and Crave in Canada on October 23.
Williams is also attached to the upcoming projects Apparatus, a comedic thriller starring Dylan O’Brien, and Tyrant, a culinary thriller featuring Charlize Theron, Julia Garner, Demi Moore and Omar Apollo.
