The AI Film Festival Japan 2026, one of Asia’s largest international film festivals dedicated to works created using artificial intelligence, held its awards ceremony in Tokyo on November 1, attracting more than 730 submissions from over 60 countries and regions, with short films and animation accounting for the majority of entries

The festival, now in its second year, was first held in Tokyo in November 2025 and has expanded rapidly as advances in generative AI make sophisticated video production increasingly accessible to independent filmmakers and creators.

As AI technology becomes more deeply integrated into everyday life, film festivals specializing in AI-generated content have emerged around the world, providing opportunities for artists to explore new forms of storytelling and visual expression.

This year’s festival, held from October 31 to November 2 at Tokyo Innovation Base in the Marunouchi district, attracted a diverse range of submissions, including narrative films, animation, experimental productions and works incorporating AI-generated music. From the more than 730 entries, organizers selected 68 works for official screening, with 21 advancing to the final round of judging.

Japan, China and South Korea accounted for more than half of all submissions, highlighting East Asia’s growing prominence in AI-assisted filmmaking. Most entries were short films or animated productions lasting approximately five to 10 minutes, reflecting the increasing popularity of compact storytelling formats among creators experimenting with generative video technology.

Among the AI tools used by participants, Seedance, a video generation system developed by China’s ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, was the most widely used. Suno, an AI music generation platform developed by the American company of the same name, ranked second, demonstrating the growing importance of AI-generated soundtracks and music in filmmaking.

The increasing sophistication of these technologies has enabled individual creators and small production teams to produce films that previously required substantial budgets, specialized equipment and large crews. AI tools can now generate moving images, characters, backgrounds and musical compositions, allowing filmmakers to concentrate more heavily on storytelling, direction and creative concepts.

Recognizing the expanding role of music in AI filmmaking, organizers introduced a new AI Film Music and Score category this year. The competition evaluated how effectively creators could use artificial intelligence to compose music that complemented visual sequences, emphasizing synchronization, musical quality and emotional impact.

Ayano Kotakagari, a young creator at Nippon Television’s production company NTV AX-ON, won the top award in the newly established category.

The festival’s founder and executive committee chairman, Kazunori Kurimoto, emphasized that technological advances alone would not determine the artistic quality of AI-generated films.

Kurimoto said that although AI technology continues to evolve rapidly, the ultimate quality of a production depends on the creator’s individual worldview, imagination and originality.

His remarks reflected a central theme of the festival: while artificial intelligence is transforming how films are produced, the ability to develop compelling stories and distinctive artistic visions remains fundamentally dependent on human creativity.
