Capcom Doubles Down on Movie Strategy After Street Fighter Film’s Box Office Debut

In a November 2 investor relations report, Capcom celebrated the Street Fighter film’s success at the box office during its opening weekend and doubled down on its plan to keep expanding its IP through merchandise, events, esports, and possibly more movies.

Capcom and Legendary’s Street Fighter movie might’ve hurricane-kicked its way to number one at the box office during its opening weekend, but the stark drop-off it suffered in the following weeks has painted a grim picture for the possibility of a sequel. (The film suffered a 72% drop in its second week, with estimates saying it earned around $91.9 million globally on a reported $80 million budget.)

Despite this, Capcom has celebrated the film’s opening-weekend success with its investors, and says that it remains committed to pursuing its Single Content Multiple Usage strategy.

What exactly is that strategy, you ask? Good question: Capcom announced it in a 2023 integrated report, where it defined the plan as a way to “utilize our popular proprietary content for multiple game platforms” by “actively turning it into movies, theater productions, and other non-game media.” Basically, it means that it’s pushing the visibility of its games by ramping up marketing, merchandise, crossovers, and, of course, movies.

In its latest investor relations report, Capcom reaffirmed its intention to continue pursuing this strategy in direct relation to the Street Fighter movie’s opening-week financials.

“In conjunction with the film’s release, Capcom worked to appeal to a broad audience with initiatives that included a worldwide promotional tour, film premiere events in Japan and the U.S., as well as collaborations with game titles, resulting in the film garnering popularity across the globe,” the report reads.

“Capcom is firmly committed to advancing the multifaceted use of its extensive portfolio of game content, guided by its Single Content Multiple Usage strategy, in order to achieve sustainable growth and enhance corporate value.”

This news comes as a mild surprise, given the apparent financial loss on Legendary’s side of things now that two weeks have passed. However, there’s a big push from the talent involved to make another movie, as told to us in several cast interviews. In fact, Olivier Richters — the actor who portrayed Zangief — revealed that the entire cast signed on for three films, which explains why the movie left on such a big cliffhanger and why we saw so little of some of our favorite fighters.

“When they asked me to play Zangief, it was all very clear. There was one goal: Show a [glimpse] of Zangief and his power, so we all want more,” he wrote in a YouTube comment. “All actors, including me, signed for three movies. ‘If a sequel is made, Zangief will shine,’ was the promise. Apart from that, you can’t expect, from a two-hour movie with so many characters, for everyone to shine in the first part.”

The overall sentiment from fans and movie-goers was rather positive toward the comedic, fist-flinging flick, though critics were less receptive to it overall. IGN scored Street Fighter a 6 out of 10, with reviewer Tom Jorgensen saying it “benefits from a very enthusiastic cast and an anarchic spirit, but Kitao Sakurai’s adaptation of the Capcom games struggles to focus all that energy into a well-told story.”
