Each unit is equivalent to the sales of an album, or 10 individual tracks sold on the album, or 3,750 ad-supported tracks or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs on the album. The new album’s first-week sales are helped by at least eight vinyl variants (including two signed editions and a Target version with three bonus tracks) and six CD variants (including a signed edition and a “notebook edition”) with Collectible packaging, comes with a voice message) – all made with environmentally friendly initiatives. The set also comes in at least four digital download versions. There are two digital versions, each containing 10 bonus tracks. Coldplay’s official webstore offers downloadable versions at a discount during release week.
The album’s vinyl sales for the week totaled 29,000, making it Coldplay’s biggest vinyl sales week ever.
The new album was preceded by the single “feelslikeimfallinginlove,” which ranked No. 81 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in July. It also made the top ten for Alternative Airplay and Adult Pop Airplay, ranking the show at No. 15 and No. 12 respectively on those charts.
The new album was released on October 4 and attracted widespread media attention, including appearances and/or performances by the band or its lead singer, Chris Martin, on CBS. sunday morning (September 29), QVC (October 2), NBC The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (October 3), NBC saturday night live (Oct. 5) and NBC’s today (October 8).
Notably, among British bands, Coldplay ranked joint fourth on the Billboard 200 chart. The Rolling Stones ranked second with a total of nine No. 1s, and Led Zeppelin ranked third with seven No. 1s. Coldplay, Pink Floyd and Wings (counting albums released by Wings or Paul McCartney and Wings) tied for No. 1 with five each.
