“I like to put my heart in every single thing that I do,” Jay Wheeler tells Apple Music. “When I do anything that has to do with my art, I like to give it all.” Born in Guayama and raised in Salinas, the Puerto Rican singer went from being a mercilessly bullied kid to one of the most buzzed-about artists in Latin music today. Initially preferring beatmaking to singing, he had to be coaxed into the spotlight by friends, gradually overcoming his insecurity as the music received a greater reception from listeners. Linking with reggaetón legend DJ Nelson, he dropped the single “La Curiosidad” to chart success globally and an expanding fanbase eager to follow his next moves in the music world. In an interview with Apple Music’s Sandra Peña, he discusses his exploratory new EP ‘De Mi Para Ti,’ what the success of his breakout hit did for him, and his initial forays into English-language music.
