Prospective film producers and distributors have until November 4 to submit their category preferences (Drama vs. Musical or Comedy) to the Golden Globes organization, which reserves the right to overturn any classification it deems grossly inaccurate rights.
Some of this year’s cases are indisputable—for example, Netflix’s emilia perezWith characters singing spontaneously, it’s clearly a musical (if not a comedy), and A24’s fauvismThe story of an immigrant facing various harrowing obstacles is clearly a drama. However, there are also many close calls, about which many have hypothesized but in most cases have not been confirmed.
hollywood reporter Having been using my phone for a long time, I can now report glitches on almost any competitor. Of course, this intel could change before November 4, and could be overturned by the Golden Globes thereafter – but as of this writing, it’s current.
Join emilia perez There will also be several other musicals in the musical/comedy realm, including Universal Pictures’ evil;Warner’s Clown: Pas de deux;Sony Classics patella;Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King; and Paramount’s better person and mean girls. but THR It’s confirmed that some very dark films will also be competing there, most notably Neon Anorathe story of a sex worker who hangs out with shady Russians; Searchlight’s real painabout cousins traveling to Poland to mourn their late grandmother; A24’s a different personthe story of a man with neurofibromatosis who underwent surgical reversal, and paganA horror film about a Mormon missionary’s home visit gone wrong; and, as golden derby As previously reported, some may object that Amazon/MGM challengera young tennis player ends up in a love triangle.
Also in the music/comedy realm: Comedy (Netflix’s killer; searchlight night bitch and Kinds of Kindness;emphasis’ drop and little by little; Magnolia flower selma;Sony’s saturday night and take me to the moon; and Sony Classics between temples); broader comedy (Disney’s Deadpool and Wolverine;general autumn guy and for aggie;Warner’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice;Amazon/MGM my old ass;Apple’s Wolves; and Sony Classics evil little letters); and, due to 2021 rule changes, animated features (Universal Pictures’ wild robot;Disney/Pixar Brain Teasers 2;Disney’s moana 2; and focus’ little by little).
Some films that might have been pushed into the musical/comedy category would be listed as dramas, including Briarcliff/Rich Spirit apprenticewhich is essentially a film about Donald Trump and Roy Cohn; A24 QueerA psychedelic film about one man’s colorful adventures William S. Burroughs Stand-in; and Sony Classics dadwhere the taxi driver (Sean Penn) and passengers (Dakota Johnson) joke on long rides.
There are a lot of movies this year that contain a lot of music, but will no Enter musical/comedy competitions – acknowledge that they are indeed plays with music: Searchlight’s bob dylan portrait Completely unknown; Netflix Maria Callas biopic Maria (meaning its heroine, Angelina Jolieno need to fight against the streamer emilia perez heroine, Carla Sofia Gascón); emphasis’ Amy Winehouse biopic back to black; and Paramount’s bob marley biopic Bob Marley: A Love.
In different eras of the Golden Globes, some such films have been able to bypass the guardians and make it into the Musical/Comedy category, which is usually weaker – e.g. Completely unknown director James Mangold2005 Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash biopic routing. But now, the revamped organization behind the Ballon d’Or won’t allow that to happen. Movies in which characters play musicians who play songs, as opposed to movies in which characters sing spontaneously, whether they like it or not, almost always end up being classified as dramas (see 2018’s bohemian rhapsody and a star is born).
Of course, the realm of drama will always include Focus secret meeting, Nosferatu and cyclist;Paramount’s Gladiator II and September 5;Sony Classics next door room, I’m still here and transcend;Apple’s Blitzkrieg;Warner’s Dune: Part 2, Furiosa: The Legend of Mad Max, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 and Juror #2; A24 baby girl, civil war, Sing, baby girl and we live in time;Amazon/MGM nickel boy, fire inside and unstoppable; Netflix piano lessons, his three daughters and Shirley;Disney’s young woman and sea;vertical order;Juggler/Janus Everything we imagine is light; Geno Lorber’s oh canada;Neon lights Sacred Fig Seeds and long legs;roadside the last showgirl;curb/vertical plum;call! The deceased will not be injured; falling forward day of battle; Bleecker Street cruel truth; Lionsgate Films little things like this and white bird;IFC/Sapan’s ghost light; and Sony’s here.
In fact, there is only one wildcard left: MUBI substance,in Demi Moore Playing an older movie star, she takes extreme measures to try to stay viable in the industry. I can see both sides debating this, and obviously MUBI and Moore’s team can see that they’re still figuring out what to do. On one hand, one might say this is a very dark drama turned horror movie. But on the other hand, one could certainly call it a travesty for launching a business that puts youth and beauty first. To me it’s a modern Sunset Strip. (1950), which straddled both descriptions, eventually entered Golden Globe competition as a drama and won four awards, including Best Actress.
