Shawn Mendes pays tribute to Liam Payne during his show at the Brooklyn Paramount Theater on Friday night (October 18).
An emotional Mendes spoke on stage, telling the audience he had met Payne “a few times” and describing his impression of the late One Direction member, who emerged from a third floor in Buenos Aires He died after falling from a hotel balcony at the age of 31.
“I’ve met Liam a few times and he’s a beautiful soul and his eyes sparkle and it’s beautiful,” Mendes began. “This is about mourning with tears those we miss, but also about celebrating them, who they were, what they left in this world, and I just want to take a moment to send him so much love, no matter what Where is he. Liam, we love you. The whole world is crying for you and we are thinking of you, Liam, this is the night for all of us. You prepared it.
Following his comments, Mendes launched into “Heart of Gold,” an unreleased song he’s previously performed live.
“You’ve got a heart of gold/You left it too soon, it was beyond your control/Under your skin and bones/You’ve got a heart of gold,” Mendes sings in the chorus.

A number of celebrities have paid tribute to the singer following Payne’s untimely death, with four of his One Direction bandmates releasing a joint statement on Thursday (October 17) saying they were “devastated by the news of Liam’s passing” shock”.
