Música popular colombiana made its debut at the 2024 Billboard Latin Music Awards, kicking off the show with a performance by Luis Alfonso.
The Colombian star kicked off the awards show with a raucous performance, singing his hit song “Tequila Con Cerveza,” which he originally recorded with urban star Blessd, followed by current hit “Chismofilia.” Luis Alfonso, wearing leather pants, boots and his signature cowboy hat, performed to the accompaniment of banda and norteño instruments.
The Mexican influence is evident in both the look and arrangement, but Luis Alfonso’s “pop-Colombian” sound is evident in the spoken-word lyrics and traditional Colombian vibe.
Luis Alfonso’s “Chismofilia” is a hit in Colombia and climbing the U.S. charts (this week, it’s No. 19 on the Billboard Latin Pop Airplay chart), and there’s a bunch of Country dancers perform the singer’s signature (and irresistible) head bob.
It was enough to bring the crowd to their feet and set the tone for the evening.
Earlier this week, Luis Alfonso spoke about popular Colombian music during a panel discussion during Latin Music Week that also featured his countryman Paola Jara , Yeison Jiménez and Pipe Bueno.
“It’s an honor to represent my country, Colombia, but also the legacy of Colombian popular music,” Luis Alfonso said in an interview.
