Rodrigo said she got the idea for the concert film during the arena run, which began in February and ended on October 22.
“I made sure there were a lot of shows to practice on because I was so nervous about filming,” she explains. “I think we always had the intention of making a concert film. I would go to all these cities, and I loved having breakfast before going to the show. I would meet all these people in the states and they would be like, ‘Oh , I just wish I could get a ticket, but I couldn’t,’ which makes me sad, so I’m really excited that maybe people who wanted to go but couldn’t find a seat can now do it comfortably on Netflix. Watch this movie in the comfort of your own home.
The special was filmed over two nights at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles in August, and Rodrigo said she was “glad we shot it in my hometown.” At one point in the film, Rodrigo salutes In-N-Out Burger as a nod to the local chain, and is cheered by the Los Angeles crowd. “We almost cut it out,” she said of the line in the film. “They said, ‘No one who doesn’t live in California is going to get it!’ I thought, ‘No. Keep it.
Filming in Los Angeles also allowed Rodrigo to star as Chappell Roan, who embarks on the first leg of her GUTS tour at the start of her whirlwind breakout year. Roan returned as a surprise guest on the Aug. 20 show, performing her hit song “Hot to Go!” Midway through the video, the two pop stars joined Rodrigo on stage for a hug and an ecstatic dance.
“I’ve heard a lot of really loud screams in my life and in the various performances I’ve done, but I really don’t think I’ve ever heard a shriek as energetic as when I announced that Chappelle was about to take the stage. screamed. “It’s just electric and people are so excited. It feels like a really special moment, so I’m really happy that it’s in the movie for us to watch forever.”
“On a personal note,” Rodrigo continued, “Chapelle was a huge part of the GUTS World Tour—she opened for the first stop and helped me through a lot of things. I’ve known her for a long time. She’s been a really good friend of mine for a while, so I’m excited to have her on board [in the film]”.
Olivia Rodrigo: GUTS World Tour The book was released a week before the U.S. presidential election, in which women’s rights have become a hot-button issue. Rodrigo’s work with Fund 4 Good is the charity component of the GUTS Tour, working with local organizations to advocate for girls’ education and support reproductive rights, work that will continue off the field and form a core part of her future career . While “Fund 4 Good” doesn’t explicitly feature in the concert film, Rodrigo’s inspiration to young women both on and off stage is evident throughout the screening.
“I created the 4 Good fund at the beginning of this year, tied to the tour – I wanted to do something that would try to help or make a difference, and this year felt particularly appropriate,” Rodrigo explains. “We raise a lot of money for America’s Abortion Fund through grassroots organizations that raise money to provide hotels or airfare, or pay for medical care, to women who are unable to have abortions due to financial or state reasons where they live. ”
Ultimately, Rodrigo said, Fund 4 Good feels like “the most important part” of the entire GUTS tour. “I really hope people get out and vote,” she said, “so we don’t need as much abortion funding next year.”
