Mickey Haller’s love record in “The Lincoln Lawyer” isn’t great.
When we first meet the defense attorney, we quickly discover that he has two ex-wives with whom he is still on good terms, one of whom is still his law clerk.
So while he was a bit unlucky in love, he and his ex were still close, which says something about him and how his relationship ended.
While the show just ended its third season, with some of it revolving around Mickey’s unresolved feelings for first wife (and mother of his daughter Haley) Maggie McPherson, the pair ultimately decided to put their relationship on hold for good. relation.
This is about making Mickey and the entire franchise better.
The Lincoln Lawyer is another series based on a beloved book series. So there are inevitable comparisons between what’s on the page and what’s on the screen.
Since I had never read the books, I came into the series with no preconceived notions or ideas about any of the characters. So, I was meeting everyone for the first time, which was neither a good thing nor a bad thing.
It’s just one thing.
The Maggie in the book may or may not be similar to the Maggie in the show, but the Maggie in the show is not a character that I think would work well with Mickey.
Now, this is probably mostly because we only see them after the divorce. It can be difficult to understand a relationship when you’ve never seen it, especially when it’s at its best.
Mickey and Maggie’s will-they-won’t-they in “The Lincoln Lawyer” can sometimes feel forced, especially when it can seem so one-sided at times. Mickey is still giving it his all, Maggie is not.
The lack of chemistry doesn’t help either. I’m not buying these two because they are soul mates, they just need a second chance to make things right.
To be fair, the same goes for Mickey and Lorna. Even if you take Cisco out of the equation, Mickey and Lorna have always felt like best friends. They are the kind of friends who bicker and know how to piss each other off, but who truly love each other.
This kind of love and adoration only belongs to the Platonic realm.
Mickey and Maggie get along better as co-parents and have a lot of deep-seated respect and care for each other, as evidenced by Maggie’s one appearance in The Lincoln Lawyer’s third season.
Maggie is there to offer Mitch a shoulder and give him the conversation about his broken relationship with Haley that only she can give you, the kind of conversation that only someone who knows your heart can give you.
In addition to Maggie and Lorna, Mickey also had an ill-advised romance with client Lisa Trammell during his time on The Lincoln Lawyer , about which the less said the better.
However, during that season, he came face-to-face with Andrea Freeman, the criminal prosecutor on Lisa’s case. The two were obvious rivals, but also had a grudging respect.
To be honest, many fans pointed out at the time that Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Yaya DaCosta had natural chemistry. The two men faced off in court, and the atmosphere was tense.
They stand on opposite sides, with a thick fog brewing behind them from love rivals to lovers.
So it’s no surprise that the two got together in season three, even though we missed a lot of important preparations. You could say the build-up came when they were jabs at each other in court and dodged each other’s best moves.
Obviously, nothing romantic happened between them at work, but when they had an impromptu dinner date, we all cheered! It looks like this might be the start of something. Indeed!
Due to the time jump, we don’t see any of the beginning.
Most people enjoy the beginning of a burgeoning relationship, from a few awkward dates early on to the first kiss. But when we hook up with Mitch and Andrea, who are already involved in a casual romance, you don’t necessarily feel like you’re missing out on anything.
Their relationship and dynamic is just right.
We’ve never seen Mickey so entranced as he smiles dreamily into his phone while talking to Andrea or texting her.
We don’t know nearly as much about Andrea as we do about Mickey (although the series took wonderful steps to show more of her when promoting her to a main cast member), but you can tell she likes Mickey.
My biggest complaint about Maggie is that she always seems to want a different version of Mickey.
Maybe this is the Mickey she once knew, or the person she wants him to be, but they’re constantly in conflict, and neither should compromise the other’s wishes.
They also had the whole prosecutor/defense thing going on, although Mitch and Andrea had the same thing and didn’t let it get in their way.
Andrea has different opinions about their opposing jobs and makes it clear to Mitch that she is nothing like her best friend Maggie. She didn’t want him to change himself; she didn’t want him to change himself. This means a lot to Mitch.
He was looking for someone who could make him his whole self, and he found that in Andrea.
Both faced complex cases, but they communicated effectively and supported each other in every way. Whether it’s a simple hug or just giving each other a presence, they are there for each other, even after a breakup.
Well, they did break up.
As I said before, I’m not a reader of the books, but I do know that Andrea wasn’t in the books for this season, so they crafted this new love story for Mickey.
If the goal was to craft a perfect tribute to Mickey and show us that he still can’t make it work, they succeeded. But they also show us that there are people who understand Mickey.
While they may disagree at times, and their views on the system may not always agree, that doesn’t mean they can’t see each other’s perspective.
Their breakup felt sudden, as their relationship felt like it was over before it really began. There were more than just sparks flying between them, but ultimately, neither man could give the relationship the time and energy it needed to thrive.
It’s a shame because the two have all the makings of a top-notch romance.
This isn’t a series that relies on romance; it’s a legal drama, after all, but launching the first truly practical, exciting, chemistry-rich dynamic with your protagonist feels like a missed opportunity.
Of course, you can never say never. Maybe one day Mitch and Andrea will try again, but it feels more likely that we’ll get another round of Mitch and Maggie (especially considering last season’s finale) and I don’t know how to feel about that.
Let me hand the floor over to you, fanatics!
Are you a fan of Mickey and Andrea? Or do you prefer Mickey and Maggie?
