Halsey was talking about a disturbing incident early in their career in which a “powerful” music executive violated their privacy by viewing nude photos on their phones without consent.
The singer-songwriter, who uses “they/them” pronouns, shared the story on her website call her daddy The podcasters revealed they felt “demoralized” and deeply disturbed by the incident.
The “Lucky” singer explained that the incident happened a few years ago when they were with executives and two male managers.
“I mean, I think it was a long time ago, but I went out and I was with this executive, like this really powerful executive, working in music in some capacity. It was It’s very cause for celebration and there’s a lot of industry discussion,” Halsey said. “I’m not surprised at all. I never felt unsafe or anything.
However, the night took a dark turn when the unnamed executive asked Halsey to send a photo of them together to his niece. Halsey took the photo, then handed him her phone and told him, “Text yourself. I need to pee.”
But when Halsey returned, they immediately sensed something was wrong.
“I saw him looking at my naked body on my phone,” they recalled. Halsey admits the moment shocked them.
“I was just frozen… I didn’t even know what to do. I was like, ‘Did I imagine this? Was this an accident? What the hell just happened?’
The thought lingering in Halsey’s mind was that the executive might even have sent the photo to herself. “I was like, ‘Did he send himself texts and then delete them? I don’t even know where they are now,'” they added, describing the disorientation and helplessness that engulfed them in that moment.
The whole experience was so invasive that Halsey found herself questioning her self-worth. “I used to think, ‘Yeah, I’m a really hot chick, and I’m one of the big players.'” And then I sat down.
“When that happened, in that moment, I thought, ‘You’re nothing. You’re nothing. You’ll never be anything. You’re still just that damn girl who’s being taken advantage of, or like men are talking about behind your back. You, or you are some kind of collateral,” she continued. “I was like, ‘You’re nothing.’ It was so frustrating.
Halsey shared that while they’ve faced “worse” incidents in their careers, this one stood out. “It’s so frustrating,” they stressed. “A lot of worse things have happened to me than this, but that one stood out for some reason because it was so nonchalant.”
Reflecting on the dark side of industry power dynamics, Halsey noted, “I was in this unique space where I thought I had reached a level where I was protected…and then all of a sudden this invasive thing happened.” They explained, This incident made them feel that they had “regressed”.
