After four seasons, most “Ghost” fans know what to expect on a Halloween show: pop culture costumes, séances, parties, and maybe even death!
While this episode only features one of them, it makes perfect sense for Patience to be particularly unhappy with the Woodstone Bed and Breakfast’s annual Halloween celebration. Thankfully, the patient piety doesn’t spoil the fun; instead, the witch trials are just as hilarious as past Halloween entries.
Led by Patience (who only seems to say “you,” “you,” or “have”), each ghost begins to show off his or her signature quirk. Heidi’s pettiness, Trevor’s lechery, and Flower’s obliviousness are all on full display, but it’s Pete’s excessive double entendres that steal the show during the trial scenes.
After the trial and sentencing, the humor reaches its peak when the ghosts are convinced that Patience’s “ghost powers” have turned Sam to stone. Of course, they were quick to believe just about anything after she first demonstrated her ability to make walls bleed last week. This discovery prompts them all to engage in hilarious banter about who has the lamest “ghost powers.” Not surprisingly, there’s no shortage of amusing digs at both Alberta and Isaac in the book, mocking the limp nature of powers like buzzing and farting.
The ghost’s mistake causes an amusing, wild (and completely unfounded) panic among them, especially when they see Jay selling “Sam” for only $7. The moment is made even funnier when Jay gently slaps the statue in the face as it’s being loaded onto the truck, which is the perfect touch for the pinnacle of absurdity. This (and the team’s subsequent efforts to bring “Sam” back) provided some of the episode’s best laughs, especially when it was revealed that Patience lacked real power.
In the end, Jay’s willingness to use his beloved Quasit doll to save Sam (and what he says when he realizes she’s not in any danger at all) adds a sweet tone to the chaos. After all, Sam and Jay are the heart of the series, and it’s always refreshing to see them (finally) transcend the spooky nonsense that makes us all happy.
Rating: 9.4/10 – It’s only fitting that a series focusing on the dead would make a splash on Halloween. This episode blended clever jokes (see “Other Notes” below for some of my favorite jokes) with a heartfelt story that made us love Sam and Jay more than ever.
Other notes:
-Trevor After mentioning the 1987 film Throwing Momma from the Train in last week’s episode, I directed readers that this film directed by Danny DeVito “needs to be watched.” In light of the events of this week’s episode, I designate ELO’s “Turn to Stone” as a “must listen” this time around!
– In addition to everything from Woodstone B&B, there’s a mummy left? Where is this mysterious ballroom we’ve never seen before?
-I’m not a “Bridgerton” fan, but I’m definitely a fan of Rose MacIver’s “Bridgerton” costume!
-I’m sure one day we’ll learn about Heidi’s ghostly powers, but until then, this seems like something you can all guess! What do you think her ghost powers are?
-Matty Cardarople, the actor who plays Captain Cardarople, always seems to be in the best possible way! Who else would waste hours watching Captain Kaboom’s completely stupid YouTube channel?
– This episode features the hilariously snobbish Margaret Farnsby (Katherine Greenwood) for the first time since Season 2, Episode 6 (“Little Bjorn”). While we don’t see her husband Henry (Mark Lynne-Baker) this time around, the two don’t seem to be giving up on their *cough* exploratory Attitude towards marriage. Patience must be glad he didn’t die just a block away!
-Patiently dancing to the Jardiance commercial is one of the funniest things this show has ever done! I hate that ad more than any ad on TV.
– Sam’s face when Thor quips about “little man” [Jay] I’m sure to get a lot of sexual benefit out of these kind words” is the best moment of the episode.
– “Ghost” finds countless ingenious ways to keep its guest stars rotating (car ghosts, ghosts attached to people, Pete), but the idea of ”other ghosts” living in the dirt is the show’s most inventive twist. A stomach-churning thought however!
-Are you sad to see patience return to the dirt? Other options include a) pretending to be sad like the other ghosts, or b) yelling “Oh my god!” like Jay.
-Just in case anyone forgets, Pete can leave the house!
