“As soon as we recorded this song, I knew it had to be the opening song and I felt like it took center stage on the whole record,” he says.
Smith spent a lot of time searching for the right words to encapsulate the tone of the record, eventually returning to a phrase he’d been thinking about for years. “For a while I was trying to find the right opening phrase for the right song to give the project a direction, working on the concept of ‘solitude’, always with the lingering feeling of already knowing what the opening phrase should be.
