Paul W.S. Anderson (resident Evil) will write and direct a feature film adaptation of a classic Sega video game, house of the dead. There’s even some concept art for you to check out.
I played this horror game as a kid and had a lot of fun. A first-person shooter arcade game developed by Sega in 1996.
The game is set in a mansion occupied by grotesque undead creatures and tells the story of two agents, Thomas Logan and “G”, who are on a mission to save Logan’s fiancée Sophie from the clutches of the mad scientist Dr. Curien.
Kurien’s resurrection experiment goes horribly wrong, causing the mansion to become overrun with zombies, monsters, and terrifying bosses.
Players progress through the levels, fighting off waves of enemies with their laser guns while exploring the dark, foreboding mansion and uncovering its many secrets.
Anderson said of the game: “I’ve loved this video game since the ’90s. I was a big player of arcade video games back then, which is how I stumbled upon Mortal Kombat. Around the same time, I also played Watched a lot of House of the Dead.
“It’s a title that I’ve always loved. The IP has gone from strength to strength and is now truly cross-generational. I was one of the original players, but now I have teenagers playing it too. That’s what it’s like for me The real appeal is that you have a cross-generational IP.
“We’re going to base this movie on Death House 3, which, if you know the mythology, is all about family conflict and action and fear. It’s about a woman named Lisa Rogan The story of her father trying to rescue her.
“It’s also about Daniel Kurion, the son of the man who caused the mutant outbreak in the first place, and who must deal with his father’s sins.
Speaking about his approach to making the film, the director said: “My approach was going to be to reflect the nature of this hyper-immersive, dynamic video game, which is why Zack Snyder shot these creatures and made them move so fast . It was a total horror trip.
“It’s different from what we did in Resident Evil, where there were a lot of traps and puzzles and things to solve. House of the Dead is essentially a rail shooter, so it just drags you right in. In action.
“I’m going to make a film that reflects this approach and plays in real time, bringing the audience right into the action. It won’t be weighed down by a bunch of backstory that might confuse people who know nothing about House of the Dead. People are excluded.
“Everyone will be on the same page. Everyone will be drawn directly into the action, understanding the characters and plot as they have 90 minutes to escape the most extreme haunted house you have ever been in.
Producer Jeremy Bolt added: “The original director of the video game, Oda Takashivery specifically, never calling them zombies. He called them living things. For example, Resident Evil is clearly based on Romero’s zombie movie.
“House of the Dead is something different. These are more like weaponized mutations, these incredible steroid-injected figures with chainsaws embedded in their limbs. It all has a very Japanese design aesthetic, very similar to Tetsuo “Iron Man” and other comics and movies, where you embed some metal and technology into the mutated human flesh.
“These creatures are very smart, and that’s another thing that’s different about House of the Dead. They don’t just slowly come towards you. They come from the side, they come from behind. They want to trick you. They’re coming at you. Trying to trap you and there are different levels of intelligence.
“They are all ultimately driven by Dr. Curien, whose life force and intelligence are almost as permanent as artificial intelligence. The body is dead, but the mind lives on in a character called Wheel of Fortune.” He loved all the big villains in House of the Dead and Creatures, and they were all named after tarot cards. So Wheel of Fortune, Death, The Magician.
Sega’s Toru Nakahara said: “Sega was a little skeptical about getting involved in big Hollywood productions, thinking ‘they’re the sharks, they’re going to rip off people.'”
“But I convinced them, and working with Paramount on Sonic changed the dynamic of our cross-media policy, and we’ve been actively developing a number of titles ever since, viewing it as a move to expand the entire Sega brand. .
“I got to know Paul and Jeremy, who are legends of zombie movies, and Dmitry from Story Kitchen. They have a rare understanding of video games and how to bring them to the screen. We hope to bring a very Cool zombie movie to add to Sega’s cross-media basket.
The creative team will pitch the project to studios, with plans to enter production in mid-to-late 2025. Check out the concept art below.
