INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The final day of the Days of the Dead Horror Film Convention brought together a unique blend of horror enthusiasts and independent filmmakers, offering a platform for rising talent to connect with fans and industry peers.
Among the creative forces present were Brandon Townsend and Viggo Johnson, the duo behind Doxby Films, an independent production company established at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Townsend launched the company in 2020 after graduating from Ball State University and says that the timing was challenging but ultimately rewarding.
“It was always my intention to go into filmmaking,” says Townsend. “The pandemic put a strain on our first film, but we got through it, and we’ve been on the road ever since”.
Townsend directs and handles behind-the-scenes work; Johnson, an actor known for his towering height and distinctive look, brings characters to life on screen. “Being an actor, you wouldn’t imagine there are a lot of roles for a 6’8 guy with face tattoos, but here we are,” Johnson joked, demonstrating his horror movie facial expressions for the crowd.
Doxby Films recently released a series of five short films, each featuring Johnson in both voice and on-screen roles. The collection ties together a series of standalone stories, a creative approach that has resonated with horror fans. The focus has now shifted to the latest project, the Doxby Analog Horror Archive, as well as future documentaries and new film ideas they are keeping under wraps for now.
Townsend also says classic horror movies are his inspiration, recalling childhood days spent watching black-and-white films like “Nosferatu” and “House on Haunted Hill.” “I’d watch the special features and see how these movies were made. That’s what made me want to make films,” he said.
For Johnson, the journey is about more than screen time. “I just hope I can keep making my art and chasing my dream,” he said. “This is the passion project.”
Despite the obstacles, Doxby Films has gained recognition in the independent horror scene. “When we did our first short film, it was kind of like an overnight flash of 30,000 views,” Johnson said. “People started to recognize me, which was a surprise.”
