Well, it’s been a while since the writers gave us this much in one episode, but Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 6 proved they still do it.
For a while, it felt like the show wanted to play it safe, opting for easily resolved storylines and happy endings.
All of that comes crashing down in the latest installment, and while I’m delighted by the drama of it all, it means we need to prepare ourselves for some heartbreak.
Tonight, there’s an exciting change to the cast, with Sophia Busch making her debut as Dr. Cass Beckman, a trauma surgeon who works at Seattle Presbyterian Hospital.
The episode begins with an awkward date night between Teddy and Owen, who recently decided to put more effort into repairing their marriage.
But despite arranging sex and getting dressed up to go to a nice restaurant, they still seemed very distant.
After all, watching my partner stare at their phone wasn’t exactly my idea of an exciting date night.
Of course, the date heats up eventually.
Unfortunately for Irving, he wasn’t cut out for that part. So sad.
Things got a little sticky after Beckman made the jaw-dropping admission that she and her husband (apparently a heart surgeon at Gray Sloan Hospital) have an open marriage.
By this point, the husbands of the relationship have been called back to work, so it’s just Cass and Teddy left to enjoy their future dates.
I know I’ve never hidden how much I despise Owen Hunt, but I think we can all admit that sharing a burger with someone like Sophia Busch beats eating French fries and wine with Owen any day.
For some reason, Teddy was quite disgusted by Beckman’s admission, considering it was a bit rich.
Teddy and Owen also had a public marriage – Owen just didn’t get the memo.
Too soon?
To his credit, Teddy resisted the urge to cheat on his husband this time.
But when she tells Owen what happened, she does it like she’s sharing a funny little anecdote, clearly hoping he’ll laugh with her.
I don’t want to be “Team Owen” here, but if I got cheated on by my spouse, I guess I wouldn’t feel stupid the next time they kiss someone else.
There’s no word yet on whether Owen and Teddy will eventually try out the Beckman Marriage Repair Method (trademark pending), but suffice to say this episode didn’t bring them any closer.
We’ve known for a while that Jake Borelli and Midori Francis would be joining the cast of Grey’s Anatomy at some point this season.
There’s a lot of mystery surrounding both characters and how they’re written, and it looks like we may now have some answers.
Levi (Borrelli), who has been debating whether to major in pediatrics or general surgery, is moving to Texas to take a pediatric research position.
To be honest, it didn’t come as any real shock.
It’s been clear for a while that Levi thought his place was among the police, and this episode only confirmed that.
Nonetheless, he proved how confident and capable he was when Bailey put him in charge of a general surgery case. He’s come a long way since they called him “Glasses,” hasn’t he?
After an emotional farewell scene with Helm, Levi just had to figure out how to tell James that their affair had to end.
Of course, we also get a sweet goodbye to Levi/Jo, right? Man, I’m really going to miss him.
I’ve been nervous all season about how the writers would handle this exit, and I have to say I’m completely satisfied with this ending for Levi.
He’s spent years feeling insecure and questioning his abilities, but his growth is on full display in this episode.
The Levi we meet may have been a goofy, clumsy, awkward alter ego, but the Levi we’re sending away is anything but.
Allowing Levi to develop the confidence to make tough decisions and follow his heart is ultimately a beautiful way to acknowledge and honor the character’s achievements.
Mika, on the other hand, might not get such a clean break.
The worst part about what’s about to happen to Mika is that it’s so predictable.
When Jules told Micah she wanted to kiss her, but they had to agree to a temporary check-up because Micah was undergoing surgery, I knew the kiss was never going to happen.
The episode ends on a cliffhanger, but it’s not hard to predict where things will go.
Micah and Chloe get into a car accident, Micah doesn’t survive, and then Chloe suddenly needs an organ transplant.
What do you know! Here comes the perfect match, even the last name is the same!
Of course, this is all speculation and I could be dead wrong.
But if Micah did leave in this way, it would be a pretty disappointing end to the show’s incredible LGBTQ+ relationships.
We may never know what happened, but we can hope that Mika at least gets to say goodbye before she’s unceremoniously killed off.
(Besides, poor Yasuda’s parents and siblings have been getting hammered, haven’t they?)
The best part of the episode was Amelia’s amazing display of solidarity with Joe as she struggled to raise a sick toddler.
When people talk about how a village raises a family, this is what they mean.
When Amelia shows up, Joe is not warm, welcoming, or friendly. She felt scared and overwhelmed, so she lashed out.
But Amelia, bless her soul, saw her co-parent struggling and met her where she was – on the floor, doing the laundry, feeding her toast.
I’m no stranger to the mom guilt Jo describes. It is all-consuming, powerful, and painful.
Amelia’s support was everything in that moment and I loved every minute of it.
Things worth mentioning
- Griffith’s unintentional “love you” reminded me of the Prince episode of New Girl. Lucas doubled down on that sentiment at the end of the episode, which made my heart grow three times bigger.
- If I had a nickel for every time a patient on Grey’s Anatomy had a pole impaled on his torso, I’d have two nickels. It’s not a lot, but…well, you know how it is.
- I never understood why the interns were left to run the hospital on their own during the night shift. Where are the adults?
- For a moment, I thought Helm might be going to Texas with Levi, but I guess we have to admit, these two never had that connection like Vic and Travis at Station 19 kind of relationship.
That’s all I got, guys!
Next week is definitely going to be exciting, so I’m sure we’ll have a lot to talk about.
Until then, please join me in the comments!
