What should I do with my hands?

This is a common question we get a lot about audition monologues. What should I do with my hands?

In other words, what should I do with my body?

This is an interesting question because it suggests that the focus is in the wrong place. It’s a sign that your “actor monitor,” the part of your brain that’s watching you to make sure you don’t fall off the stage or hit the furniture, is too big and noisy.

Often, if you’re worried about what to do with your hands and body, it’s because you’re not focused on what you want to do at the time, usually with another character. You’ve lost the clue to your job in that scenario. If you really focus on what you’re doing, your body will follow. You have to trust that focus will mean the body will follow the mind and they will connect.

So, what really matters is not what you do with your hands and body, but where should you focus your attention? Are you focused on the task at hand?
