The Lord of the Rings: The Ring of Power Season 3 is currently being written, and the showrunners recently gave some insight into one of the show’s most interesting storylines, Elrond.
In an interview with YouTube channel Rings and Realms, showrunner Patrick McKay teased the show’s future: “We’re writing season three and there’s a lot going on in Númenor.”
When it comes to Elrond specifically, showrunner JD Payne explained: “Tolkien gave us several big moments in Elrond in the First and Second Ages.
“We know that he was Gil-galad’s messenger during the Battle of the Last Alliance. We know that he is now bound for Eregion to fight in a hopeless, ill-fated war.
“Literally from the beginning, we’ve been thinking about Elrond going through these huge, life-changing events and experiences.”
McKay went on to talk about their plans to destroy Elrond, sharing the information with the cast Robert Aramayo: “We’re going to beat him. We’re going to make him the most optimistic character in the show, right.
“I remember talking to him and he said, ‘Why? I don’t understand, I love Lord of the Rings, but why? It’s like we’re taking him on a journey and we’re going to break him because this is Elrond story.
“This is the story of Elrond, an incredible force of good who lost everything.” Added Payne: “The hits just keep coming and never really stop.”
So, this is a very dark and tragic story for Elrond, who will be a completely broken Elf by the end of the series. Damn, this is going to be a real downer.
