2024 short film by Chris Esper short memory At its heart, this is an ode to the lost. Those who have lost themselves to a cruel disease: Alzheimer’s disease, also known as dementia. Loved ones witness the memory erasure of an affected family member, spouse or friend. Little by little.
Their world becomes smaller and smaller; the circle shrinks and they have nothing.
This is so cruel.

this works
Esper wrote and directed this sad story about Anna’s memory loss. The story takes place in a dark room surrounded by open bookcases, as Anna struggles with her remaining memories, all the things that are special to her.
The surrounding black area may be Anna’s previous memories. Thoughts and life events have been lost. These books now exist only on sparse bookcases.
Cinematographer Nelson Reis renders each frame accordingly. Reiss used autumnal tones in some scenes. Additional tones and focal points are added to the scene as it plays.
The actors all brought a sense of authenticity to their roles. Sissy O’Hara has an unenviable role as old Anna, and she knocks it out of the park. The same goes for Christie Devine as Noelle Anna’s daughter. Still, here’s a tip of the hat to the entire cast.
Timing is everything
As someone who lost a parent to Alzheimer’s disease and is now a survivor experiencing the pain of this devastating disease, this person has been hit hard. Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease or “aging”. The new cancer that invades our minds has many names.
They are all equally miserable.
Not just family members but also those suffering from this heinous disease. Chris, along with the cast and crew, bring together a woman’s struggle with her lost memory. We cannot know how everyone copes with the loss of life and wealth; things that took a lifetime to build are torn down.
One memory at a time.
judgment
distant memory is a solid four-star effort. Using a time frame of just over 22 minutes, Chris successfully demonstrates how heartbreaking this disease can be.
