For fans of Freevee, Amazon’s ad-supported streaming service, we have good news and bad news.
The bad news is that the online retail giant announced today that it will shut down the platform after five years.
This news comes as we prepare for the final season of Bosch: Legacy!
The good news is that all the content that made Freevee so beloved by fans of quality original programming is still available.
Yes, you can still watch the final episodes of Bosch: Legacy, as well as other popular Freevee series like Judy Justice, Neighbors, Courtroom Justice, Jury Duty and High School.
In a statement to Variety , Amazon representatives confirmed that Freevee’s entire content library will soon be available on Prime Video.
“We have established Prime Video as the first-stop entertainment destination where customers can customize their lives by streaming exclusive Prime entertainment content produced by Amazon MGM Studios, licensed movies and TV series, add-on subscription content from other services, and live sports. Transform your viewing experience. [free, ad-supported streaming TV] channel and the full Amazon Freevee content offering.
In other words, Amazon ultimately figured out that offering two separate streaming services didn’t make sense.
As a result, Freevee users will now need to find their content elsewhere, but the news is far less catastrophic than past streaming service shutdowns.
Of course, now that Amazon offers multiple ad-based platforms (many of which have tons of live channel options), the streaming world is starting to feel a lot like cable TV. But that’s a conversation for another time.
Today’s Freevee news isn’t terribly surprising or disturbing. But it’s yet another reminder that after a decade of aggressive expansion, the streaming landscape is now shrinking.
Freevee started out as IMDb TV, but it would soon cease to exist.
But there are signs that streaming executives are finally realizing that angering subscribers is a bad thing, and content on the platform is here to stay.
Beyond Black Beauty (already streaming on Prime Video) will have the distinction of being Freevee’s last original series.
The platform will be phased out in the coming weeks.
TV fans, what do you think? Is it good for us that Amazon is giving all these Freevee shows a new home?
