Megadap’s new M2RF autofocus adapter for Leica M-mount lenses and Canon RF mirrorless cameras is now available for pre-order. The adapter allows photographers to pair classic Leica rangefinder lenses with Canon’s latest mirrorless cameras while adding autofocus functionality.
Megadap has been developing autofocus adapters for Leica M lenses across multiple mirrorless systems for several years. One of its most notable products was the MTZ11, released in 2020, which brought autofocus to Leica M lenses on Nikon Z cameras. The M2RF expands that concept to Canon’s RF mount.
Bringing Autofocus to Leica M Lenses
Leica M lenses are renowned for their compact size, excellent optics, and distinctive rendering. However, because they are designed for rangefinder cameras, they are manual-focus lenses.
To add autofocus capability, the M2RF incorporates a motorized helicoid inside the adapter. Rather than driving the focus mechanism inside the lens itself, the adapter physically moves the entire lens forward and backward to achieve focus.
The system works similarly to the focusing technique used by macro photographers, where the plane of focus is adjusted by moving the camera or lens closer to or farther from the subject.
Powered by Canon’s Dual Pixel Autofocus
The M2RF is designed to work with Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF system, allowing compatible cameras to provide features such as Eye Detection AF, Subject Tracking, Face Priority AF, and continuous autofocus.
The adapter also includes electronic contacts for transmitting EXIF metadata to the camera, allowing photographers to retain image information while using adapted lenses.
An integrated AF/MF switch lets users quickly toggle between autofocus and manual focus. It also includes dedicated Macro and Infinity modes to expand the focusing range for different shooting scenarios.
Supports Heavier Lenses and Adapted Glass
One limitation of autofocus adapters that move the entire lens assembly is reduced performance with heavier optics. Megadap says the M2RF addresses this by using a more rigid construction that minimizes flex and wobble during focusing.
Another advantage of the M2RF is its stacking-friendly design. Photographers can mount other manual-focus lenses using a Leica M conversion adapter and then attach them to the M2RF, allowing a broader range of vintage lenses to benefit from autofocus on Canon RF cameras.
