I have to admit, Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 7 did not go the way I expected.
Shocking deaths, emotional goodbyes, and tons of flashbacks to old Grey’s Anatomy storylines that I wasn’t really prepared for.
Granted, some of this episode was predictable, but overall, this hour blew me away.
After knowing that Midori Francis would be leaving the show this season, along with her character Mika Yasuda, it wasn’t a surprise to see the talented intern undergo a near-death experience.
What shocked me was that she survived.
Unfortunately, her little sister Chloe (who was already battling cancer) did not survive the car accident that nearly took Mika’s life.
But somehow, after an intense hour of surgery and the anxiety of friends and girlfriends, Mika made it through.
The question now remains: How exactly do the producers plan to eliminate Yasuda from the show?
Saying goodbye to her character through a traumatic accident makes sense, and the choice is consistent with the departures of other characters on Grey’s Anatomy .
Derek “McDreamy” Shepard, George O’Malley, Lexi Gray, Mark Sloan – I could go on, but the point is, Gray’s main characters had a lot of dramatic and bloody deaths.
So this begs the question: What’s the point of having Mika go through a car accident that she technically caused, and then kill her sister?
You could say I’m jaded, but now I’m worried that Micah’s actual exit will be even more tragic and unbearable.
Throughout the series, other characters wax poetic about their feelings for Yasuda.
Jules and Mika’s relationship has been heating up all season, and Jules is especially devastated, but all the interns are struggling with the prospect of losing their friend.
Despite a couple of touching speeches (Blue’s actually made me scoff a little), thankfully no one really got to say goodbye to Yasuda. However, no matter what.
This week marks Jake Borrelli’s final episode as Levy prepares to move to Texas for a pediatric research fellowship.
First, Texas? As a gay person? exist this Political climate? Why couldn’t the writers have sent Levi to a more queer-friendly place?
I figured at least his new love interest James would be there for him.
Is it too soon for these two to move together, especially to a new city and state across the country? Yes.
But you can’t stop true love, so James quits his job as Pastor Gray Sloan (a position he’d been holding for, what? Two months?) and follows Levy to San Antonio.
It was a very romantic gesture, albeit a bit reckless. I wish both of them the best.
Of course, Levi can’t go anywhere without first spending some exciting moments with Joe.
The bond between the two is a little confusing, if only because they’re both downright mean.
But no one can deny that there is love between them.
Regardless of the physical distance, Levi and Joe were always close, especially now that Levi had taken on an official godfather role in the lives of their unborn twins.
Levi’s arc ends with a beautiful montage of some of his best moments on the show, which is the perfect way to pay homage to a character who has experienced so much growth in just a few years.
The storyline has him temporarily moving to Texas, but Levy said he’ll return to Seattle at some point, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see him pop up again one day. (One can hope, right?)
This week, while Chloe, Mika, and Levi were the obvious focus, my character focus was on Lucas.
From day one, he has been working hard to fit in at the hospital and in his class and find his place.
He carries the weight of the world on his shoulders and believes he is responsible for everyone and everything, which is clearer than ever in this episode.
From the physical manifestations of his stress (he vomited into a biohazard bag as he ran between Chloe and Micah’s operating room), to his rushing away from Simone when she tried to comfort him, Lou Cass shows a lot of his internal struggles.
He can never be blamed for Chloe’s death.
But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t blame himself for it, especially after Mika asked him to look after her sister.
Adams isn’t the only one to take responsibility and guilt, either.
As Mika prepares to see her friends again, she will have to face Lucas’ heartbreak over not being able to save Chloe, and Jules’ feelings over marking Mika for surgery before the accident of guilt.
It’s a classic setup and I honestly wasn’t looking forward to it.
I think they’re going to let Micah offer some kind of absolution to Lucas and Jules, and while I know they need to hear that she doesn’t blame them, the focus really should be on Micah right now.
It wouldn’t be fair to put anything else on her.
BTW, I hope the scene where Midori Francis reacts to Chloe’s death gets an Emmy nomination. Her sobs made my heart tremble.
bit and bob
- While Chloe codes, the interns only react to the code. Why is it that when things get bad in this hospital, there are never any adults?
- There are many scenes that recall old Grey’s Anatomy scenes: the interns huddled outside the trauma room window, and Jules and Simon looking at the baby for comfort in the nursery. It’s heartbreakingly nostalgic.
- With all the chaos, Owen and Teddy managed to get past the weird Cass Beckman kissing storyline, but Sofia Busch will be back, so I can’t imagine that drama is over yet.
- There’s a special kind of horror to watching Bailey comfort another class of interns as they grapple with the loss of one of their own.
Overall, it was a stressful and impactful event that led us to believe that things would get worse before they got better.
Next week is the fall finale, and the promos have already set up an incredibly scary premise that’s yet another callback to an old storyline.
Adams and Joe were in a convenience store that was robbed at gunpoint – which, if you remember, is how Adams’ grandfather died. The surrounding atmosphere is not good.
Leave me a comment in the comments and let me know what you thought of this week’s episode!
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
