Universal Music Japan (UMJ) has appointed Shintaro Aki, a widely respected industry and A&R executive, as Managing Director of EMI Records Japan, effective immediately.
He will be stationed in Tokyo and send Naoshi FujikuraPresident and CEO of Universal Music Japan.
Aki joins UMJ from Warner Music Japan, where he worked as a senior executive producer, where he produced several artists and albums for the label.
Since 2007, he has served as A&R for one of Japan’s most popular female singers, super flycontributed to her domestic chart success, which included seven No. 1 albums.
He has also contributed to the success of other Japanese pop artists, including Ulfuls, Ges no Kiwami Otome, Indigo la End, WANIMA and THE YELLOW MONKEY.
During his 20 years with the company, Aki held various senior positions before being promoted to executive in 2020, including seven years as head of Creative Room 1 [the label now known as Prescribe]It is the home of some historic rising stars such as Aimyon, Chanmina, Campanella, Mariya Takeuchi and Tatsuro Yamashita.
He started his career as a promotion specialist, successfully collaborated on several TV show tie-ins and contributed to hit works by national and international artists.
