The 46-year-old country singer, whose real name is Jason Hyde, was taken to the hospital on Friday (November 15) after a gun he was holding went off, hitting him in the abdomen. The news was first reported by TMZ.

A representative for Hyde told CBS News that the incident occurred when the singer’s gun “slipped out of its holster, struck the side of the Jeep, and shot him in the abdomen.”

Hyde’s wife, Misty, confirmed in a post on her husband’s Facebook account that the musician was in stable condition and clarified that the shooting was not a deliberate act or the result of a shotgun.

“This was not his shotgun and no one shot him,” Misty Hyde wrote. “He got out of the car and reached for his 22, and when he grabbed it, the 22 came out of its holster, hit the exterior of the Jeep, and drove away. Sundance said that’s what happened. So fast, he could see the bullet dislodge.

She explained that the bullet entered Sundance just above her belly button, entered her abdominal wall, and missed nearly every vital organ.

“He doesn’t need surgery because they won’t remove the bullet,” Misty wrote. “It’s a good thing to be on the bigger side. The bullet was in his fatty tissue.

Misty said Sundance did not have a cellphone with him at the time of the accident, but a passing driver came to his aid and called 911. He was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.

Misty assured fans that her husband was “in good spirits” and expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of support. “The children are with him now. Prayers were answered as the bullet caused no internal damage. Thank you everyone for your prayers,” she wrote on Facebook.
