challenger Star Josh O’Connor has signed on to star in Steven Spielberg’s latest feature.
Universal Pictures is backing the untitled event film, and Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth and Eve Hewson have appeared in promotional trailers for the film.
Little is known about the project, although sources say it will have sci-fi elements and mark Spielberg’s first so-called major production since 2018 Ready Player One. It is based on a story by the filmmakers, while the screenplay was written by David Koepp, whose previous collaborations with Spielberg include jurassic park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, world war and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Spielberg’s long-time collaborator Kristie Macosko Krieger (The Febelmans, “West Side Story”) is being produced.
Universal Pictures has set a release date of May 15, 2026.
O’Connor is currently in the midst of awards season challengerThe tennis drama is directed by Luca Guadagnino and stars Zendaya and Mike Faist. The film was released theatrically by MGM and grossed nearly $100 million at the global box office.
The actor is currently filming Kelly Reichardt’s art heist drama planner Starring in Rian Johnson’s latest murder mystery alongside Alana Haim, Waking the Dead: Mystery of the BladeNetflix will launch next year.
O’Connor is created by CAA, Independent Talent Group and Johnson Shapiro.
