Peacock’s upcoming series Laid will bring a delightfully dark twist to the romantic comedy.
Created by Nahnatchka Khan (Trust the B – Apartment 23) and Sally Bradford McKenna (The Mick), this is no ordinary romantic comedy.
No, this is something darker.
The creators call it a “fucking romantic comedy” in which finding love may mean dodging death.
Stephanie Hsu (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) stars as Ruby, a woman with a knack for dealing with bad relationships.
But now, she’s facing a bigger problem: the mysterious deaths of her exes.
As the bodies pile up, Ruby and her best friend AJ (Zozia Mamet, “Girls”) dive headfirst into her romantic past to warn her ex-lover.
Ruby has a long list to tackle, so she needs a sex schedule to keep everything on track!
From one-night stands, to casual flings, to “Green Day Shirt” – a guy remembered only for his band merchandise – Ruby and AJ hilariously scramble to follow their trail.
The show’s creators call it a coming-of-age love story that blends the optimism of a traditional romantic comedy with the chaos of a thriller.
Khan and McKenna’s show was inspired by dark moments in recent years, including the pandemic and industry strikes.
They felt Ryder was the perfect way to inject suspense, gore and twisted humor into the genre’s familiar tropes.
The result? A comedy that makes you believe in love while also making you a little scared of dating (especially if you’re a guy, obviously).
The cast alone is worth watching.
Hsu and Mamet are also joined by Michael Angarano (“This Is Us”) and Tommy Martinez (“Good Trouble”).
Additionally, the stellar guest star cast includes Simu Liu (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”), Alexandra Shipp (“Tick, Tick…Boom!”) and Chloe Fineman (“Saturday Nightlife”).
Fans can also look forward to appearances from John Early (Search Party), Kate Berlant (A League of Their Own) and Grammy-winning musician Finneas O’Connell.
With all eight 30-minute episodes set to air on December 19, Laid could be the perfect holiday binge for those who like romance but chaos.
Viewers will laugh and cringe as Ruby unravels the mystery of her romantic past.
They might also feel better about their messy dating history. Hey, that’s a nice little Christmas gift, isn’t it?
What do you think of Peacock’s bold new take on romantic comedy? Will you get married this December?
