Critically acclaimed Danish period horror drama girl holding needleThe film, shot by cinematographer Michal Dymek, won the Golden Frog award at the Camerimage Film Festival in Torun, Poland, on Saturday evening. The winners were selected by a jury led by two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett.

Camerimage is known for celebrating the art of cinematography, so its honor also extends to the directors of photography behind its major competition films. But this year’s jury went out of its way to add a “Special Mention” girl holding needle40-year-old director Magnus von Horn.

This well-crafted period thriller is loosely based on the true story of Danish serial killer Dagmar Overbai, who helped poor women kill their unwanted children in 1910s Copenhagen.

hollywood reporterContributing film critic Leslie Felperin summed up the film as “a dark, urgent Danish drama” that “is like one of those devilish knots, the more you squirm, the tighter it gets …”[ing] Reaching a devastating climax, taut as piano wire.

She adds, “The film was digitally shot in black and white in a claustrophobic 3:2 ratio by emerging cinematographer Michal Dymek (True Pain, EO). The film has the eerie, still pose of an antique photograph, a pleasing beauty.

The Camerimage jury awarded the Silver Frog Award of this event to British director of photography Lol Crawley in recognition of his work—— THRChief critic David Rooney has previously described Brady Corbet’s monumental immigrant artist epic as “magnificent” Brutalist. The film was shot in retro VistaVision format, “a massive canvas that speaks volumes about the diverse textures of the narrative.”
