If after SEAL Team Season 7 Episode 4, you’re like me, still trying to figure out what’s different about this season, I may have stumbled upon the answer.
When you look back at what didn’t happen in the first four episodes, you can see a series of clues as to what might have happened.
At the risk of sounding like Kamala Harris, who is shedding the burdens of her past, Bravo is adrift and with that comes its final season.
A tale of two SEALs
It’s also possible that I’m looking for more remaining episodes. It’s always a wish to hope for the ending of any series, but when you’re talking about military shows, what does that actually look like?
Thankfully, Ray’s retirement is coming, which gives us a good idea of what someone in a healthy, loving relationship will find after 20 years of service.
But on the other hand, we have Jason, who shows the damage that serving your country can cause.
Ray has a supportive wife and a new business venture that directly ties him to the work he has done for decades. It gave him purpose. He saw the light at the end of the tunnel.
Jason has yet to make such an effort. While he may be retiring, or at least getting close to it, he hasn’t shown any desire to give up. He is bound by the past and sees how many lives it has taken.
What happened to Jason?
The scary thing about Jason is that he keeps everything buried deep inside. He closed himself off to the point where people speculated on his actions based on past actions, but they were wrong.
His relationship with Mandy is a saving grace. Others may not be as forgiving of his mistakes as he is. But he’s also hiding something from her. You would think that, despite all the pain she had witnessed and suffered, he would share himself more freely. From what we’ve seen, not that much.
On the one hand, the military that had given them decades of life was dying. It was under new management to deal with new enemies. The focus of the mission remains, but the reasons behind the mission have changed.
They are asked to learn from scratch but produce the same results. It’s not easy for those who make decisions, and it’s even harder for those who take orders.
When Bravo escapes in SEAL Team Season 6, their jobs are intact but their egos are bruised as they are grounded and given menial shore duties. Losing Klay so quickly hurt the team.
So, what does this mean for Bravo, and especially for Jason?
New war, new bravery
After being stuck with their feet on the fire for so long, it would be difficult to find their way back. For the most part, they’re making the most of it. Sonny was saddened by Clay’s death, but he turned it into something positive.
Who would have thought Sonny would go to such lengths to make Drew a member of the team? But if Sonny wants Drew to join, Jason is making excuses for him.
Jason is dealing with an important matter, and flippant remarks like the above are not helpful.
The SEALs had to bring in Clay’s replacement, but I feel like Drew represents something bigger in the plans, like he’s going to be instrumental in whatever Jason needs to find himself moving forward.
The idea popped into my head when Drew keenly observed that Jason was frightened, and Sonny realized that Drew was probably the one who saw this because he had experienced something similar.
So, they are connected in some way. Hopefully it won’t take an entire season to find out what it is.
Who is Jason protecting?
Jason expressed dissatisfaction with Operation Burma (never heard that phrase before, but I like it…whether it’s spelled correctly or not is another matter) before setting off because he felt it wasn’t right. Specifically, the potential loss of life is unacceptable.
It’s a valiant effort, but not if it puts your team at risk. Bravo scrambles to come up with some plan to make Jason happy with the surgery, but it starts to fall apart almost immediately. That it didn’t fail isn’t a testament to his leadership, it’s a testament to the abilities of his team, including Drew.
Ultimately, Jason’s concern for civilians could have disastrous consequences for his team, whom he was calling for change in the first place under the guise of protecting them.
This doesn’t escape Ray and he calls Jason out, but until Jason is willing to talk to someone about what’s going on in his head (which has nothing to do with traumatic brain injury), this is going to continue.
The happy ending we get for SEAL Team requires Jason to come to terms with his own existence, including all the losses he’s experienced over the years and his role in them.
It also requires Ray to retire and turn his attention to helping other souls like Jason – who has lost his way after years of death and destruction.
I also wonder if Jason’s newfound need to protect civilians is also due to Clay’s death. After all, Clay died as a civilian at the hands of another veteran. You never know what will flip the switch.
Thankfully, it’s not all darkness and brooding, aka random thoughts
I can’t lie; part of the reason I can’t stand LCDR Kirkpatrick is because of other characters Derek Phillips has played, especially Billy Riggins in Friday Night Lights. But when Lisa won his heart, he won mine too.
I’m a little lost on Project Target and how and why Bravo partnered with the DEA in the first place. Too much jargon, too little time.
With all the attention on Drew this season, it would be a crime if they didn’t bring in Kirk Acevedo to play Relatives. It’s like Bo Knapp went to Kirk Acevedo school to play this character.
Sonny’s random conspiracy theories, including eating a carnivorous coconut crab seen by Amelia Earhart and Stevie Wonder, and his bullying attempts were highlights of this dull episode.
It was so frustrating to hear that Hannah was engaged and that her fiancé was close to Leanne. I kind of hope they find their way back to each other. Sonny and Lisa? Will never happen.
It was the first time I’d noticed during an operation that nothing looked unfamiliar – not street signs, roads, not even the light switches in the factory. Would Myanmar workers really quit if the pay truck didn’t show up?
How did they find a dive bar in Myanmar? Bravo would always find a dive bar that looked suspiciously like the other dive bars they frequented.
now you!
First of all, thank you for reading! I appreciate it and welcome your comments.
How do you think Jason is doing now? Do you have any idea where he’s going this season?
