when i walked into the theater and saw Evil: Part OneI wasn’t quite sure what to expect. As a long-time fan of the Broadway musical, I had reservations about how it would translate to the big screen.
Also, I wasn’t excited when I was cast ariana grande As Glinda and Cynthia Erivo Elphaba first announced. I didn’t know much about Erivo’s work, and Grande’s previous work had never resonated with me.
But, honestly, I was completely blown away by this movie and their performances. Grande and Erivo are absolutely phenomenal in this film. Their portrayals of Glinda and Elphaba were full of emotion and layers, capturing the spirit of these beloved characters in a way that exceeded my expectations.
The two actresses effortlessly embody these characters and perform those iconic songs with extraordinary skill. I have to give credit where credit is due.
visual effects in evil It’s a joy to watch. Director Jon M. Chu brings The Wizard of Oz to life with stunning sets and meticulous attention to detail. From the glittering spiers of the Emerald City to the enchanting School of Hinds, every panel is like a love letter to the magical world of Oz.
Although I do wish the film leaned more towards the vibrant color palette of the original The Wizard of Oz In the movie, I understood Zhu’s vision to make the fantasy world more grounded and make it feel real. Still, leaning into the style of the original film might make for a cooler visual experience.
The story is adapted from the three-time Tony Award-winning musical (which itself was based on the novel by Gregory Maguire) and remains largely true to its Broadway roots.
It explores how Elphaba, misunderstood and ostracized because of her green skin, became the Wicked Witch of the West, and how Glinda evolved into the Good Witch, driven by ambition and privilege.
Their friendship is at the heart of the story, and the film captures this perfectly, showing how their relationship is tested and changed by the politics and power struggles in Oz. The emotional journeys of these characters are profound and I found myself really moved by their arcs.
The supporting cast is equally wonderful. Michelle Yeoh Shining with the noble and cunning Lady Morrible, Jonathan BaileyThe portrayal of the charming Fierro is entertaining. Ethan Slater As a blog and Marissa Bird When Nessarose delivers a heartfelt performance, Jeff Goldblum Adding his signature charm and quirkiness to the character of the Wizard.
Watching the film in a packed theater packed with fans was an experience in itself. The audience paid full attention, laughed and cried, and burst into cheers and applause at critical moments. This film has the ability to capture the spirit of the musical and deliver it to both old and new fans.
If you are a fan of the show evil Musical, this movie is a must-see. Jon M. Chu’s faithful adaptation preserves the heart and soul of the stage production.
While there were moments where I wished the film had taken more risks or embraced its fantasy elements more boldly, these are minor criticisms of this wonderful production.
evil It’s a captivating emotional journey filled with great music and impressive performances. This is a movie worth seeing on the big screen!
