‘Killing Room’ (2023): Copycat Killer Artist Disappoints

2023 production Killing room Giving us a storyline that parodies a killer artist. A bit disappointing. This is one I want to like.

It has a great cast and a story that loves to poke fun at the art world. A world of selfishness. Experts who make up as they go. Instead, what we see is a story that focuses on celebrity and its fakeness.

    story

Gallery owner and art dealer Patrice bets all her money on her nose. To help compensate for her habit, she paid the dealer for a painting. His boss; Gordon, decides to use her gallery to launder money. Gordon’s killer; Reggie begins using his tools of death to create his own art.

He became a sensation in the art world.

    main actors

    Uma Thurman plays Patrice.

    Samuel L. Jackson plays Gordon.

Joe Manganiello stars as Reggie in “The Artist.”

Maya Hawke (daughter of Uma Hawke and Ethan Hawke) is Grace.

    Amy Comb plays Leslie.

    behind the scenes

Jonathan Jacobson wrote the script and director Nicol Paone puts everyone through the paces of a parody. Killing room It feels too much like other movies about serial killer artists. This theme arguably started with the quirky Tourist Trap (1979). Chuck Connors is opening his wax museum to visitors with new exhibits.

House of Wax (2005) is another form of killing patrons to fill a museum, and of course the 1990 film Still Life: The Fine Art of Murder .

    So what’s wrong with this?

It’s a toss-up between trying too hard and relying on a story that feels like a pastiche. The plot line doesn’t veer into trope territory, but it’s not terribly original.

Except for the whole Jewish baker, who was engaging in illegal activities in his shop. I feel that, perhaps, Samuel L. Jackson as a black Jewish man could be seen as a tribute to the late, great Sammy Davis Jr. It wants to be fun, fresh and unmarked.

    judgment

Killing room It feels contrived, forced, and a little desperate. It feels like a copy of other films of a similar nature. The funny thing is, none of these movies are that good.

I can safely give this movie 3 stars out of 5. Also, I really like the idea of paying homage to Sammy Davis Jr. Killing room Now streaming on Starz.
