The 51st Telluride Film Festival officially kicked off Friday afternoon with the world premiere of little by littleAn animated documentary about innovative singers, songwriters and record producers Pharrell Williamsscreening as a patron preview of the Werner Herzog Theater. Attendees agreed that the film was truly original, unconventional, and a hilarious good time.
Directed by the great Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville (20 feet from the star), the intense 93-minute film, at the request of Williams, who experiences sound through a visual experience known as synesthesia, uses Lego animation to illustrate Williams’ journey from his projects in Virginia Beach to the pinnacle of his acting career, as well as his There have been ups and downs along the way. (Neville had never worked in animation before.)
Williams is not only the subject of the film – opening up like never before in an interview with Neville, both of whom were Lego-ified – but is also one of the film’s producers. This certainly paved the way for the film to incorporate many of the hits that Williams performed and/or produced during his career – including “Happy,” which he is most closely associated with – as well as two new tunes. In particular, “Piece by Piece,” sung by the Princess Anne High School Marching Band, may be a strong contender for the Oscar for Best Original Song.
When it comes to the Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences doesn’t always know what to do with movies that blur genre lines. 2008 Waltzing with BashirFor example, this was a wonderful animated documentary that ended up only being nominated for an Oscar for Best International Feature. 2021 run away Is the first animated film to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary and The first documentary to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. No documentary has ever been nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. And there are only three animated features—1991’s beauty and the Beast2009 up and 2010 toy story 3 ——Used to be.
But the focus function will be released soon little by little On October 11, the team behind Williams and Neville intend to push little by little Not only did it win Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary and Best Original Song, it was also shortlisted for 10 Best Picture categories. Considering how thin this year’s contender list is, and the love and admiration for Williams and Neville, I wouldn’t rule it out.
