Movie review:
- CinemaSerf: “Celine” (played by Anne Hathaway) and “Alice” (played by Jessica Chastain) are neighbors, and their sons “Max” and “Theo” are best friends. When tragedy strikes, the family dynamic changes profoundly, and the two women’s relationship is quickly cemented by feelings of resentment and distrust. Eventually, “Celine” seemed to extend an olive branch, but it wasn’t long before “Alice” began to suspect her ulterior motives. For long stretches, director Benoît Delhomme manages to maintain an air of apprehension and tension, with the pair deftly challenging us to choose to believe. Sadly, however, all of this is suddenly clarified for us, and we’re treated to a rather disappointing, hole-in-the-wall ending. That said, there’s effective chemistry between these actors, who successfully imbue their characters with strong determination and a protective instinct for those closest to them. It’s well-paced throughout and certainly worth a watch – although the TV does a decent job, the movie doesn’t really add much, visually or cinematically, to this sometimes rather wacky thriller.
