“Whether I want to or not, I wake up every morning as a political lesbian in a house with a woman raising two young women who I need to keep safe and who I need to constantly balance and evaluate what our family can do. To what extent can we help move this country forward in any way that we can,” Carlisle said. “Being here and watching the honorees step up and accept the diplomatic and dominating honor of representing our country is a profound and somber feeling in a way, but it’s also uplifting because it reminds me, Art is the best art in the world and that’s how we represent ourselves.
