An attack at London’s Notting Hill Carnival earlier this week left two people seriously injured dead, police said on Saturday (August 31).
The Metropolitan Police said Cher Maximen, 32, was stabbed in the street on August 25 and died in the early hours of Saturday. The child was not injured during the carnival.
A 20-year-old local man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and may now face murder charges.
Police also pronounced dead Mussie Imnetu, 41, who was found unconscious with head injuries on a street in London’s West End on Monday night. The chef visited the UK from his home in Dubai.
A 31-year-old London man has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm, and police said the charge would be re-examined following Imnetu’s death.
More than 1 million people attend this two-day celebration of Afro-Caribbean culture every year, taking place on the streets of the Notting Hill community in west London.
The event draws revelers from around the world with its flashy dancers, colorful costumes, rousing steel bands and roaring outdoor sound systems, but is sometimes marred by off-site violence. Police said eight people were stabbed at this year’s event and more than 300 people were arrested, most for offensive weapons or drug offences.
“Carnival is all about bringing people together for positive celebrations. Carnival police spokesperson, Commander Charmain Brenyah, said the incident, which ended with tragic casualties and other serious violence, will make Saddened by all involved.
